Title: WELCHEM To USF

1
WELCHEM To USF!
  • Designed for Chemistry Department Majors Summer
    Fall 2008 Transfer Students

Science Math at USF
2
Supporting Sciences
  • Supporting Science Requirements Include
  • Math
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

3
Mathematical Foundation for Science Courses
  • Before attempting Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or
Calculus courses, students should have a strong
    math foundation.
  • MAC 1105 College Algebra is pre-requisite for all
    math and science courses

4
Common Math Requirements
  • One of the following Calc I II sequences (8
    hours)
  • MAC 2241 2242 Life Sciences Calculus
  • MAC 2311 2312 Calculus (with analytic geometry)
  • MAC 2281 2282 Engineering Calculus
  • STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics can be
substituted for any Calculus II for Biology, BMS,
    or INS majors
  • Math requirements vary by major example
Chemistry BS students have additional Math
requirements PLEASE see degree sheet and your
    advisor

5
Math Pre-requisites
6
Math Permits
  • You will Need a Prerequisite Permit to sign up
    for calculus IF
  • You have out of state transfer pre-calc credit
  • You have private school transfer pre-calc credit
  • USF does not have your qualifying SAT/ACT scores
  • If the Math pre-requisite is not showing in
    system
  • Math permits can be obtained through the math
    department contact http//www.math.usf.edu/
  • Note You may have to submit a course
description to the Math Dept for evaluation of
    outside math credit

7
Physics Pre-requisites
  • You must register to take lecture and labs
    simultaneously
  • USF offers 2 types of Physics Sequences be sure
    to check your degree sheet.
  • PHY2053/L and PHY2054/L General Physics
  • PHY2048/L and PHY2049/L Calculus-Based Physics
  • If you have completed one part and need a permit
for the other, you can request a physics permit

8
Non-Calculus Based Physics
  • Recommended sequence for Life-science
    and pre-health students
  • BMS, INS, Chemistry BA majors will follow this
    sequence.

9
Calculus Based Physics
  • Chemistry BS Majors MUST follow this sequence.
  • Calc I must be completed before Physics I, and
Calc II must be completed before Physics II

10
Chemistry Course Sequence
11
Chemistry Pre-requisites
  • MAC 1105 College Algebra is required to take
    General Chemistry I (CHM 2045 )
  • CHM 2023 Chemistry for Today For Science Majors
is required to take prior to General Chemistry I
if a student did not take Chemistry during high
school or in the past 2 years.
  • Chemistry Lecture MUST be taken before or
    simultaneously with the Lab.

12
ChemistryPrerequisites Permits
  • Lectures may be taken without the lab
  • Labs must still be completed prior to graduation
  • Labs must be completed in order
  • If pre-requisite is not showing in system, a
student must submit a permit request form.
    http//chemistry.usf.edu/undergrad/permits
  • If course evaluation is needed (required for all
chemistry that transfers from out of state or
    private institutions), students should submit
this form with syllabus and permit request form

13
Biology at USF
  • Biology I Cellular Processes 4 hours
  • BSC 2010 (lecture)
  • BSC 2010L (lab)
  • Biology II Biodiversity 4 hours
  • BSC 2011 (lecture)
  • BSC 2011L (lab)

14
Basic Biology Prerequisites
  • The corresponding Lecture and Lab MUST be taken
simultaneously for both Biology I (BSC2010 Lab)
    and Biology II (BSC2011 Lab).
  • If you previously passed one and not the other,
you may request a permit to take the course
    alone.
  • You may request a permit at
  • http//biology.usf.edu/ug/permits/

15
Common Upper-level Biology
  • MCB 3020C General Microbiology
  • PCB 3023/L Cell Biology
  • PCB 3063/L Genetics
  • PCB 3712 3713L General Physiology

16
Upper-level Biology Course Pre-requisites
  • Biology I II Lectures and Lab, and Chemistry I
II Lectures, must be completed for ALL
    upper-level biology
  • There may be additional prerequisites though
  • For example, Microbiology requires CHM 2210
Organic Chemistry I to be completed as well
  • Upper-level Lectures may be taken without the lab
(ex. PCB 3023 and PCB 3023L).
  • Biology courses must be less than 10 years old to
    automatically meet pre-requisite
