1
Social Uses of Camera Phones
  • I saw this and thought of you
  • By Tim Kindberg, Mirjana Spasojevic, Rowanne
    Fleck, Abigail Sellen.

2
How and why ?
  • Analysis on the basis of intentions at the time
of image capture vis-à-vis subsequent patterns of
    use.
  • Focus on 2 issues
  • 1) Timeliness of communication.
  • 2) Role of Common ground.

3
Introduction
  • Worldwide boom in Mobile telephony. Current
camera phone sales exceed 50 of the mobile phone
    market.
  • Previous projects concerned with analyzing user
patterns in camera phone usage -- Maypole
project and research sponsored by Finnish company
    Radiolinja
  • This paper is concerned with how camera phones
are used to interact with people not physically
    present at the site.

4
Method
  • 34 participants in the US UK ranging in ages
from 15 to over 50 with a variety of types of
camera phones and service providers. Most phones
had a 640X480 resolution and most had MMS and
    GPRS enabled.
  • 2 sets of interviews at intervals of 2-5 weeks in
between. Data on 320 images was collected.

5
Results
  • Reasons on why the subject said they captured the
image were classified into 2 dimensions 1)
EMOTION whether the reason for capture was
    affective or functional and
    2) SHARING whether the image was captured for

Critique
  • Novelty 3rd research of its kind.
  • Usefulness/Impact Impact would be more if study
had been more comprehensive involving larger no.
    of people
  • Soundness of Approach - Lack of coverage of
    ethnographical data.
  • Evaluation - vague information. Coverage of only
2 aspects of the taxonomy table. Doesnt cover
peoples desire for future technology aspect.
  • Techniques for improvement - 1) Use more
quantitative data. 2) wider coverage of remaining
    aspects of the taxonomy table.
  • Extension can be extended to cover usage
patterns of technologies capable of interfacing
    with camera phones.
