Title: Angiosperm Life
1Angiosperm Life
- A quick view of the life cycle (see your lab
notebook) - Then a tour of flower arrangement
2(No Transcript)
3Flower dissection, radial symmetry
4Inflorescence Types Inflorescences are the
arrangement of flowers on the plant. Many types
exist, the following is a brief tour of some of
the diversity that exists
5Snapdragon dissection. Irregular flower with
superior ovary.
6Solitary Flower Supported by a peduncle.
7Solitary flower Supported by a peduncle.
8Spike inflorescence Each flower is sessile and
solitary
9Spadix a fleshy spike with reduced flowers. The
Spathe is a bract at the base of the
inflorescence. Note the yellow structures at the
base of the spadix, these are likely male flowers.
10Spadix of Amorphophallus titanum This spadix is
46 inches tall! The plant is a rare plant of the
Indonesian rain forests
11Raceme Each flower is solitary, but supported by
a peduncle
12Panicle inflorescence This is an indeterminate
branching raceme.
13Head inflorescence
14Receptacle of a head inflorescence with disk
flowers. Receptacle is chaffy. Note that each
disk flower is sessile, has 2 stigmas, and 5
petals.
15Single disk flower from a head inflorescence.
Inferior ovary, 5 petals. Remnants of the sepals
are seen in the pappus which is scale-like in
this flower.
16Capillary pappus of head inflorescence
17Simple umbel
18Compound umbel
19Corymbose inflorescence. Note flat topped
aspect.
