History of Newspapers
  • Before the advent of the press, newsletters were
    hand-written and posted in the community to tell
    about people or events.
  • In the 1500s (16th c.) single sheets were
    printed about war and political changes using
    hand presses, but they were rare as the process
    was very time-consuming.

  • By early 1600s (17th c.) people began to
    recognize importance of sharing news and thus
    news sheets became more frequent.
  • The Weekly Newes, printed in English, was the
    first regularly published, folded newspaper in
    Europe.
  • The first daily newspaper, The Daily Courant,
    began publication in 1702 (18th c.) in England.

  • Advertising transformed newspapers from a form of
    public service to a source of revenue.
  • Advances in printing press technology allowed
    newspapers to grow in size, circulation, and
    availability thru the 18th c.
  • Mass circulation of major newspapers began in the
    19th c. and continued into the middle of the next
    century.

  • Despite other sources of instantaneous news,
    newspapers remain a big part of a huge multimedia
    corporation.
  • There are thousands of newspapers in print
    world-wide.
  • In order to stay current, many newspapers now
    provide online versions which customers can
    access via the internet.
  • This option saves paper and the environment and
    also allows instant updates to stories as news
    occurs.

  • In the U.S., there are many national newspapers
    that bring news from all over the country.
  • Some of the larger newspapers are USA Today, Wall
    Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles
    Times, Denver Post, Chicago Tribune, and
    Washington Post.
  • There are also community newspapers that report
    news of interest within a neighborhood these
    report on local people and events and are usually
    delivered free of charge and are supported by
    local advertising.

    nationally.
  • They are printed on half-size paper.
  • Sold at stores and news stands for a price.
  • Known for sensationalism, gossip and
    entertainment value.
  • Reporting is often of a dubious nature questions

    sources.
