• A conductor of the Sydney symphony Orchestra in
  1947, proposed that a new concert hall and Opera
  Theater be built for Sydney on Bennolong Point.
  The Committee confirmed the site of Bennolong
  Point and recommended a competition for the
  design of the building.

• On 29 January 1957 Jern Utzon who had submitted a
  revolutionary design concept was declared winner
  of the competition.

• Jern Utzon was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 9
  April 1918. He qualified as an architect in 1942
  and worked with some significant European
  architects till establishing the private practice
  in 1950.
• 1957 he won the competition for the design of the
  Sydney Opera House his most famous work. His
  other work includes the Kuwait National Assembly
  (1972) and the Bagsvaerd church comples(1975).

  unique eucalypts, and for the beauty of its
  natural landscapes.

The Legend

• The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that
  three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo'
  lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the
  Katoomba tribe.
• These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love
  with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet
  tribal law forbade them to marry.
