2Mishteh 19 times in Esther
- Esther 514, 710
- Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to
him Haman, Have a gallows fifty cubits high
made and in the morning ask the king to have
Mordecai hanged on it, then go joyfully with the
king to the banquet. And the advice pleased
Haman, so he had the gallows made. . . . So they
hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared
for Mordecai, and the king's anger subsided.
3Mishteh A feast or banquet often associated with
a special occasion
- Used 44 times in the OT
- When a mishteh is held, some are saved/blessed
and others killed/judged - The state of the person attending a mishteh
determines the outcome for him - The same idea is found in the New Testament with
deipnon or gamos
4 The first mishteh in the Bible is at Sodom
- Genesis 193, 4
- Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside
to him and entered his house and he prepared a
feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and
they ate. Before they lay down, the men of the
city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house,
both young and old, all the people from every
quarter
5Mishteh Ishmael and Isaac divided
- Genesis 218 - 10
- And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham
made a great feast on the day that Isaac was
weaned. Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the
Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.
Therefore she said to Abraham, Drive out this
maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall
not be an heir with my son Isaac.
6Mishteh One exalted the other killed
- Genesis 4020 - 22
- Thus it came about on the third day, which was
Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all
his servants and he lifted up the head of the
chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker
among his servants. And he restored the chief
cupbearer to his office, and he put the cup into
Pharaoh's hand but he hanged the chief baker,
just as Joseph had interpreted to them.
7Wicked Nabal holds a mishteh
- 1Samuel 2536
- Then Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was
holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a
king. And Nabal's heart was merry within him, for
he was very drunk so she did not tell him
anything at all until the morning light.
8Nabal is judged and Abigail blessed
- 1Samuel 2538, 42
- About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal and
he died. - Then Abigail quickly arose, and rode on a
donkey, with her five maidens who attended her
and she followed the messengers of David and
became his wife.
9 David shares a mishteh with Abner and He is
subsequently killed by Joab
- 2Samuel 320, 30
- Then Abner and twenty men with him came to David
at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and
the men who were with him. - So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner
because he had put their brother Asahel to death
in the battle at Gibeon.
10 Israels mishteh but coming judgment
- Isaiah 512, 13
- Their banquets are accompanied by lyre and harp,
by tambourine and flute, and by wine But they do
not pay attention to the deeds of the Lord, Nor
do they consider the work of His hands. Therefore
My people go into exile for their lack of
knowledge And their honorable men are famished,
And their multitude is parched with thirst.
11 The wedding feast Matthew 222-14
- Matthew 222, 9
- The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king
who gave a wedding feast for his son. - verses 3-8 The invited guests refuse to come
and are judged - Go therefore to the main highways, and as many
as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.
12 Improperly clothed for the feast
- Matthew 2211, 12
- But when the king came in to look over the
dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not
dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him,
Friend, how did you come in here without wedding
clothes? And the man was speechless.
13 The unprepared are judged while the prepared
enjoy the wedding feast
- Matthew 2213, 14
- Then the king said to the servants, Bind him
hand and foot, and throw him into the outer
darkness in that place there will be weeping and

- John 132

the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to
betray Him,
15 The Lords Supper as a mishteh
- 1Corinthians 103 - 5
- and all ate the same spiritual food and all
drank the same spiritual drink, for they were
drinking from a spiritual rock which followed
them and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with
most of them God was not well-pleased for they
were laid low in the wilderness.
16 The Lords Supper as a mishteh
- 1Corinthians 1020, 21
- No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles
sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to
God and I do not want you to become sharers in
demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and
the cup of demons you cannot partake of the
table of the Lord and the table of demons.
17 The Lords Supper as a mishteh
- 1Corinthians 1117 - 19
- But in giving this instruction, I do not praise
you, because you come together not for the better
but for the worse. For, in the first place, when
you come together as a church, I hear that
divisions exist among you and in part I believe
it. For there must also be factions among you, so
that those who are approved may become evident
among you.
18 Coming to the Lords Supper improperly
- 1Corinthians 1120 - 22
- Therefore when you meet together, it is not to
eat the Lord's Supper, for in your eating each
one takes his own supper first and one is hungry
and another is drunk. What! Do you not have
houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you
despise the church of God and shame those who
have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I
praise you? In this I will not praise you.
19 We should examine dokimazo to determine if we
are the approved dokimos (v 19)
- 1Corinthians 1127, 28
- Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the
cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be
guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But
a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is
to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
20 The Lords Supper gives us a chance to repent
before the final eschatological mishteh
- 1Corinthians 1129 - 33
- For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks
judgment to himself if he does not judge the body
rightly. For this reason many among you are weak
and sick, and a number sleep. But if we judged
ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But
when we are judged, we are disciplined by the
Lord so that we will not be condemned along with
the world.
21 Those properly clothed participate in the
eschatological mishteh
- Revelation 197, 8

to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and

to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright
and clean for the fine linen is the righteous
acts of the saints. -

who are invited to the marriage supper of the
Lamb. And he said to me, These are true words
of God.

cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the
birds which fly in midheaven, Come, assemble for
the great supper of God, so that you may eat the
flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and
the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses
and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all
men, both free men and slaves, and small and
great.
24 Either the marriage banquet in heaven or become a
banquet for the birds
- Revelation 1921

came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse,
and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
