How can NICE help?
  • NICE is an independent organisation responsible
for setting standards to promote good health and
prevent ill health, based on best value for money
  • NICE recommendations can help schools and their
    partners implement national initiatives to
    promote social and emotional wellbeing

  • Social, emotional and psychological health can
  • help protect young people against emotional and
behavioural problems, violence and crime, teenage
pregnancy and the misuse of drugs and alcohol
  • improve their ability to learn and achieve
    academically, thus affecting their long-term
    social and economic wellbeing

5
Scope
  • Young people aged 1119 years in full-time
    secondary education, including those with
    disabilities and special education needs

6
Recommendations
  • The six recommendations cover the following
    areas
  • Strategic framework
  • Key principles and conditions
  • Curriculum approaches
  • Working with parents and families
  • Working in partnership with young people
  • Training and continuing professional development

7
Strategic framework
  • All secondary education establishments should
    have
  • an organisation-wide approach to promoting social
    and emotional wellbeing
  • the necessary organisational capacity
  • access to specialist skills, advice and support
  • the ability to share practical advice
  • their progress assessed by the appropriate local
    scrutiny committee

8
Key principles and conditions
  • Ensure social and emotional wellbeing features in
    improvement plans, policies, systems and
    activities
  • Promote an ethos of mutual respect and learning
  • Provide a safe, nurturing environment
  • Provide pastoral care and specialist services
  • Measure and assess social and emotional wellbeing

9
Curriculum approaches
  • Provide a curriculum that promotes positive
    behaviours and successful relationships
  • Tailor social and emotional skills education to
the developmental needs of young people
  • Integrate relevant activities into all other
    aspects of secondary education

10
Working with parents carers
  • Work in partnership with parents, carers and
other family members to promote young peoples
    social and emotional wellbeing
  • Help parents, carers and other family members to
    develop their parenting skills
  • Offer those living in disadvantaged circumstances
practical help so that they can be fully involved

11
Working in partnership with young people
  • Introduce mechanisms to ensure young people can
contribute to decisions that may impact on their
    social and emotional wellbeing
  • Provide them with opportunities to build
relationships, particularly those who may find it
difficult to seek support when they need it
  • Provide information on the opportunities for
discussing personal and emotional issues and
    their rights on confidentiality

12
Training and continuing professional development
  • Integrate social and emotional wellbeing within
    the training and continuing professional
    development of practitioners and governors
  • Ensure practitioners have the knowledge,
understanding and skills they need to develop
young peoples social and emotional wellbeing

13
Costs and savings
  • The guidance on social and emotional wellbeing in
secondary education is unlikely to result in a
    significant change in resource use
  • Some organisations may incur additional costs
  • It could result in a significant reduction in
    public service costs

14
Discussion
  • How can we provide a safe environment where the
threat of bullying and violence is minimal?
  • How can we help parents, carers and other family
members to participate fully in activities to
promote young peoples social and emotional
    wellbeing?
  • What partnerships do we need to effectively
    implement the guidance?
