Contents of the Presentation
  • What is Personality?
  • Joharis Window
  • Communication with the Self

3
Personality
  • Is made up the characteristic patterns of
thoughts, feelings, and behavior that make a
    person unique
  • Arises from within the individual and remains
    fairly consistent throughout life.
  • Identity of the person
  • Sum total of what you stand for
  • All your shades

4
Personality from inside outside
  • From the inside
  • This is the person you think you are
  • Defined by your hopes, dreams, aspirations,
    goals, and intentions
  • From the outside
  • This is your reputation
  • The person others think you are

5
Manifestation of Personality
  • Personality not only influences how we react to
our environment, it also causes us to behave in
    certain ways
  • Our personalities are demonstrated through our
    behavior, thoughts, feelings, and interactions
    with others

6
The desired personality
  • Should conform to your model of self-esteem
  • Should give you the legitimacy through social
    recognition
  • Should be enduring
  • Should be seen as a valued entity by others

7
Scope of Personality Development
  • To reduce the gap between what you are and what
    you want to be
  • This requires a continual communication with the
others and with your own self

8
Joharis Window(Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham)
  • I Know
  • Others know
  • I know
  • Others dont know

Hidden
Open
  • I dont know
  • Others know
  • I dont know
  • Others dont know

Blind
Unknown
9
I know and others too know
  • This is the open side of my personality
  • Let me get a feedback on how it is perceived

10
I know but others dont know
  • This is the hidden side of my personality
  • Let me bring it out if I sincerely believe in its
    worthiness
  • Let me work on it till it is no more an
    embarrassment to me
  • The communication process itself helps me to
    bring these aspects out

11
I dont know but others know
  • I am blind to this part of my personality
  • It is most likely a weak spot which is either
  • Exploited by others
  • Tolerated by others despite its negativity
  • Considered inconsequential
  • Solicit communication about it both directly and
    indirectly
  • As ones level of confidence and self esteem
develops, one may actively invite others to
    comment on one's blind spots.

12
I dont know and others dont know too
  • This is the unknown part of my personality
  • Will be revealed when situations develop
  • (e.g. Your character in adversity)

13
Enlarging the open quadrant
  • Self-disclosure A give and take process between
    me and the people
  • As I share something about myself and if the
other party is interested in getting to know me,
    they will reciprocate
  • An interaction between two parties can be modeled
dynamically as two active Johari windows

14
Some communication tips
  • Be a patient listener
  • Know the games being played if any
  • Understand body language
  • Read between the lines
  • Work upon the feedback
  • Communicate the corrective actions you have taken
  • Come out as a genuine person
  • Relate from a position of strength, not duress
