Assessment Offences

• There are many different assessment offences
• All involve attempting to gain unfair advantage
• Cheating devalues your degree
• It is unfair to your colleagues
• It may even be illegal in some circumstances
• Wastes valuable lecturer time in marking and
  post-offence procedures

Plagiarism some definitions

• Using published work without referencing (the
  most common) i.e. passing off published work as
  your own
• the use of unacknowledged material obtained from
  the web
• Copying coursework essays
• Submitting another persons work as ones own
• Purchase of model assignments from the web or
  other source
• Copying another students results or work
• Taking another persons computer file/program

Cheating

• Collaborating with any other people when the work
  is supposed to be individual
• Cheating in examinations
• Falsifying results of labwork

Causes of Plagiarism

• Poor subject knowledge
• A wish to gain high marks
• Poor timekeeping leading to rushing work the day
  before submission
• Different home regulations and customs
• Different study styles at Schools and Colleges
• Misunderstanding of University standards and
  regulations

Plagiarism/ Incorrect referencing

• Becoming widespread
• Can be cut and paste
• Could be bought bespoke essays
• Can be deliberate or accidental
• Forgetting to reference an inclusion

Avoiding Plagiarism for Students

• Begin working on your assignments as soon as
  possible
• Try to use your own words in all assignments
• Ask your tutor which method of referencing he or
  she would like you to use
• Most staff in Engineering prefer Harvard

• Employ more staff to read work when grading
• Could not be funded
• Use electronic integrated system Greenwich now
  has a Turnitin licence for detection
• We prefer to educate our students about
  plagiarism to help you avoid mistakes
