1Digestive System
Digestion- the breakdown of complex food into
molecules that can be absorbed into cells for
energy.
2Gastrointestinal
consisted of mouth, pharnyx, esophagus,
stomach, small intestine, large intestine
(colon), rectum and anus
3Mouth
The mouth contains teeth and tongue with
papillae (taste buds)
Aides in mastication (means to chew)
Salivary Glands produce saliva which moistens
and lubricates food.
In these glands are amylase which break down
starches into
4Pharynx
- This is the portion of the digestive tube which
must make the decision of what is air and what is
food. - Inside the Pharynx, the epiglottis, a cartilage,
which keeps food from going down the windpipe.
5Esophagus

- This connects the pharynx to the stomach.

- It uses sphinctor muscles to push behind bolus
of food.
6Stomach
Contains pepsin which breaks down proteins and
HCL which breaks down carbs
7Small Intestine
- Absorbs nutrients from food
- The DUODENUM is the beginning portion of the
S.I. - Bile from the liver breaks down lipids and
bicarbonate neutralizes stomach acid.
8LARGE intestine
- Acts as a refuse container which dehydrates
feces.
9Rectum
short holding tank at the end of the large
intestine.
10ANUS
- A MUSCLUAR SPHINCTER WHICH HOLDS IN FECES
- YOU CAN CONTROL IT SO IT IS VOLUNTARY
