unobstructed. No lock or fastening shall be

and effective provisions are made to remove
occupants in case of fire or other emergency.

  • Doors shall be arranged to be opened readily from
    the egress side whenever the building is
    occupied. Locks, if provided, shall not require
    the use of a key, a tool, or special knowledge or
    effort for operation from the egress side.

    permitted to have key-operated locks from the
    egress side, provided that the following criteria
    are met
  • (a) Permission to use this exception is provided
    in Chapters 12 through 42 for the specific
    occupancy.
  • (b) On or adjacent to the door, there is a
    readily visible, durable sign in letters not less
    than 1 in. (2.5 cm) high on a contrasting
    background that reads as follows
  • THIS DOOR TO REMAIN UNLOCKED
  • WHEN THE BUILDING IS OCCUPIED

    by the authority having jurisdiction for cause.

    through 42, key operation shall be permitted,
    provided that the key cannot be removed when the
    door is locked from the side from which egress is
    to be made.

  • Every door in a stair enclosure serving more than
    four stories shall allow re-entry from the stair
    enclosure to the interior of the building, or an
    automatic release shall be provided to unlock all
    stair enclosure doors to allow re-entry. Such
    automatic release shall be actuated with the
    initiation of the building fire alarm system.

  • If a stair enclosure allows access to the roof of
    the building, the door to the roof either shall
    be kept locked or shall allow re-entry from the

    exceptions of this section shall be permitted.

  • Doors within a required means of egress shall not
    be equipped with a latch or lock that requires
    the use of a tool or key from the egress side.
  • Exception No. 1 Door-locking arrangements
    without delayed egress shall be permitted in
    health care occupancies, or portions of health
    care occupancies, where the clinical needs of the
    patients require specialized security measures
    for their safety, provided that staff can readily
    unlock such doors at all times. (See 18.1.1.1.5
    and 18.2.2.2.5.)
  • Exception No. 2 Delayed-egress locks complying
    with 7.2.1.6.1 shall be permitted, provided that
    not more than one such device is located in any
    egress path.

  • Delayed-Egress Locking. NFPA 1017.2.1.6.1
  • Allowed only where permitted by the Occupancy
    Chapters (12 thru 42)
  • Allowed only in buildings with approved
    Smoke/Fire Detection Systems or Supervised
    Sprinkler systems
  • Doors shall unlock on actuation of detection
    system or sprinkler system
  • Doors shall unlock on loss of power to the lock
    or the lock controlling mechanism
  • An irreversible process shall release the lock
    within 15 seconds upon application of a force to
    the release device that shall not be required to
    exceed 15 lbf nor be required to be continuously
    applied for more than 3 seconds. The initiation
    of the release process shall activate an audible
    signal in the vicinity of the door. Once the door
    lock has been released, relocking shall be by
    manual means only.
  • Compliant signage is required adjacent to door
    that reads,
  • PUSH UNTIL ALARM SOUNDS
  • DOOR CAN BE OPENED IN 15 SECONDS
  • NFPA 1017.9.1.1(4) requires emergency lighting
    at the locked door.

  • Unlocks by an approved sensor that detects an
    approaching occupant on the egress side of the
    door.
  • Doors shall unlock on loss of power to the sensor
    and/or on loss of power to the access control
    system that locks the doors.
  • Unlocks by manual release button on wall adjacent
    to the door. Button to be readily accessible and
    clearly identified with signage that reads
  • PUSH TO EXIT
  • Doors shall remain unlocked for at least 30
    seconds.
  • Unlock on activation of building fire protective
    signaling system, if provided, any smoke/fire
    detection system, and/or sprinkler system , if
    provided. Doors to remain unlocked until
    protective system is reset.

  • LOCKING SYSTEM CONTRACTOR / FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
    CONTRACTOR
  • Identification of a properly licensed Locking
    Contractor and a properly licensed Fire Alarm
    Contractor allows use of the single
    Access/Delayed Locking Systems Request for
    Exemption form and fee.
  • Identification of a licensed Locking Contractor
    ONLY, will require submission of an additional
    Fire Alarm Exemption Request form and fee to
    insure that a licensed Fire Alarm contractor is
    making proper connection of the locking system to
    the Fire Alarm system. The second form may be
    submitted simultaneously with the first, OR if
    submitted afterward shall reference the approved
    locking PO, or denial will most likely result.

  • Allow installation of locking systems as defined
    by AHJ in accordance with 10118.2.2.2.4
    Exception 1.
  • Used for clinical needs of patients requiring
    special security measures for their safety.
  • Allow the interconnection of the locking system
    with approved fire alarm and sprinkler systems as
    required by the requirements of Interpretive
    Memorandum 2000-15.

  • DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK IN THE BUILIDNG
  • Requires unlocking upon loss of power to the
    locking/releasing device
  • Requires unlocking on activation of Fire Alarm
    system.
  • Requires remote release of locking, and permanent
    signage at release location indicating remote
    control functions.
  • Automatic relocking is prohibited. A specific
    action must be taken at the remote release
    station to re-engage the locks.
  • Locked doors not in direct view of the remote
    release station shall have a manual mechanical
    means of unlocking the door.
  • Locks must be keyed alike and keys shall be
    carried by staff at all times
  • Provide reason that the locking is necessary for
    patient safety.
  • Identify the staff/patient ratio in the secured
    area.
