Title: The American Revolution

1
The American Revolution
  • The War Moves to the
  • Southern Colonies

2
The Southern Campaign
  • In 1778, the British authorities adopted a new
plan to transfer operations to the South,
  • Starting in Georgia, the Brits moved north,
    devastating all of South Carolina.
  • Opposition came in the form of Guerilla attacks
by Francis Marion, and Thomas Sumter.
  • May 12, 1780 Charleston is surrendered to the
    British.

3
Important Battles in South Carolina
  • Charleston
  • Camden
  • Cowpens
  • Kings Mt.

4
British Mistake
  • The British thought that the south was full of
loyalists who would support the King. This was
    not the case at all.

5
Indian Fighting Guerilla Warfare
  • Some of the American Generals learned how to
fight from the French and Indian War.
  • Francis Marion was called the Swamp Fox because
of how he hid in the woods and swamps of the
    Carolinas attacking by surprise.

6
Francis Marion American Patriot
  • Marion escaped Charleston and formed Marion's
Brigade, one hundred fifty tattered, penniless
patriots. None received pay, food or even
    ammunition from the Continental Army.
  • The only reward they sought was freedom from
    tyranny, and freedom for America.

7
Battle of Camden
  • Gen. Horatio Gates commander of patriot troops
    in the South.
  • His defeat at Camden on August 16, 1780, was one
of the most disastrous battles in which an
American army has ever been engaged. This defeat
terminated all organized opposition to British
    control in South Carolina.

8
Battle of Cowpens Daniel Morgan
  • 1754, he got into an altercation with a British
officer. This act of defiance led to a sentence
of 500 lashes on the bare back.
  • Morgan was too tough to die. Once the scars
healed over, he was determined to get revenge on
    the British.
  • King George owed me one

9
Cowpens
  • Battle from the Patriot
  • British are defeated in Jan 1781, by a perfect
    battle plan.
  • Tricks British into thinking he is retreating and
    then attacks.
  • Huge win for the Militiamen
  • Use of the long rifle is key to victory.
  • British troops had been worn out by their
generals trying to catch up with Rebels.

Kings Mountain
  • On the 7th of October 1780
  • Only battle that did not feature any British
    troops.
  • Gen. Patrick (the Bulldog) Ferguson was killed by
frontiersmen who were upset with the brutal
    actions of British Generals
  • march his army over the mountains, hang their
leaders, and lay their country waste with fire
    and sword".

12
Kings Mountain"Don't kill any more! It's
murder!"
13
Brutal Fighting
  • 157 Loyalists were killed, and 163 so seriously
hurt that they were abandoned on the mountain.
Some were rescued by local Loyalists, and nursed
    back to health.
  • Others were less fortunate for weeks afterwards,
    turkey-buzzards, wolves and hogs fattened
    themselves on human remains.

14
Guilford Courthouse Greensboro NC
  • The battle fought here on March 15, 1781, was the
largest, most hotly-contested action of the
    Revolutionary War's climactic Southern Campaign.
  • The serious loss of British manpower suffered at
    Guilford Courthouse foreshadowed Lord
Cornwallis's final defeat at Yorktown seven
    months later.

15
Guilford Courthouse
  • Gen. Nathaniel Greene's mixed Continental and
militia army vs. Lord Cornwallis' smaller,
veteran forces on March 15, 1781.
  • Cornwallis, eager to avenge the British defeat at
Cowpens, S.C., won the battle but took heavy
losses and failed to destroy the American force.
  • Although defeated in battle, Greene won his
objective and Cornwallis soon moved to Virginia,
  • British lost over a quarter of their troops.
