Background to Psalm 85
  • Many scholars believe this Psalm was written at
    the time of Judahs return from the Babylonian
    Exile.
  • During and after this time, they eventually
    rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, as well as the
    Temple.
  • It is more likely that vv. 1-3 reference that
    return the Psalm itself appears to be from a
    later time.

The History of the Tabernacle/Temple
  • The Tabernacle was built following the Exodus,
    according to Gods instruction ca. 1400 B.C.
  • The Temple was built by Solomon ca. 944 B.C.
  • Solomons Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians
    in 586 B.C.
  • The Temple was rebuilt in 516 B.C., and then
    destroyed by the Romans in A.D. 70.

  • 3 You set aside all your wrath and turned from
    your fierce anger

  • 4 Restore us again, O God our Savior, and put
    away your displeasure toward us.
  • 5 Will you be angry with us forever? Will you
    prolong your anger through all generations?
    6 Will you not revive us again, that your people
    may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your unfailing
    love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

    he promises peace to his people, his saintsbut
    let them not return to folly.
  • 9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear
    him, that his glory may dwell in our land.

  • righteousness and peace kiss each other.
  • 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and
    righteousness looks down from heaven. 12 The Lord
    will indeed give what is good, and our land will

    him and prepares the way for his steps
