  • How are you feeling at this point?
  • About this time, parents are saying
  • Dont know what hurts more, my brain or my
    feet.
  • Im suffering from information overload.
  • Can I come back to school?
  • I got dropped off at campus and did most things
myself as a college freshman. I made a lot of
    mistakes. This is much better.

  •
  • Parents can only give good advice or put them
on the right paths, but the final forming of a
person's character lies in their own hands.
  • Anne Frank

To be successful, we expect our students to
  • Be scholars
  • Class is like life, students do much better if
    they show up!
  • Connect with faculty adviser/faculty
  • Make use of campus resources. Writing Center,
Math Labs, Free Tutoring, Counseling Center,
    Disability Support Services, etc.
  • Seek out those fields of endeavor, of study, of
search and research, that fill your heart and
mind with passion and your spirit with hope.
    Follow your heart!
  • Believe in, and practice academic honesty.

5
UW students are expected to
  • Be servants leaders
  • Want to give something back to each other and the
    University community
  • Get involved with student government, civic,
    activities, churches, etc. and
  • Center for Volunteer Service received more than
2000 student inquiries about community service.
Thousands of student volunteer hours are donated
each year, including various alternative spring
    break trips.

6
Our expectation is our students will
  • Make peace with each other civility, tolerance,
    respect -
  • To be able relate to one another despite a
persons race, creed, color or sexual
orientation. We want them to leave the
University valuing diversity, not being afraid of
    it
  • Develop new leadership and people skills
  • Prepare to be part of the global community and
  • Widen their perspective by being a friend to all
    who would be their friend.
  •

7
We expect that UW students
  • Should be individuals of character
  • Always do right. This will gratify some people
    and astonish the rest.
  • Mark Twain
  • Aspiration vs. basement ethics. Want students to
    take responsibility for their actions
  • Tell each other, faculty, and staff the truth in
    order to gain their respect
  • Each student has rights and responsibilities they
need to aware of and follow at UW. The Student
Code of Conduct provides guidance and assures
students will be held accountable for their
    actions
  • Becoming a person of character and integrity
means narrowing the distance between what you say
    and what you do
  • We will assist students in becoming better
citizens, neighbor and a member of our community.
This means trying to show them the way
  • If a student fall short, then well talk with
them. Behavior can be an impediment to success
    and
  • Our goal is encourage and train leaders for
tomorrow and not subject to be featured on
COPS, or, on the front page of their hometown
    newspaper.

8
We want our students to
  • Be men and women of spirit The happiness of
your life depends upon the quality of your
    thoughts. Marcus Aurelius
  • Be happy with and take care of themselves as
    students at UW
  • Take care of themselves physically and mentally.
    Spend time daily acquiring exercise,
    nourishment, and rest
  • Develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime,
not just as a student at UW and
  • Help them understand the difference between your
obligation to me vs. my obligation to you.

9
Expectations for success say that
  • Students should not be dependent upon
    drugs/alcohol
  • Note the term dependent. Cant say dont
drink because that message may not work.
Student habits have already been determined by
the time they arrive on a college campus
  • If someone has problems when they drink then they
have problems, period. We need to offer
assistance and guidance when they have a problem
  • In support of the above we offer the AWARE
program and a Parental Notification policy as
part of our assistance to students with drug and
    alcohol problems
  • Through our judicial system the focus is on
    educational not punitive actions, but,
consequences will fit the offense and
  • This past year we intervened in 219 (165
freshmen) alcohol offenses and 25 drug (all
    freshmen) judicial offenses.

10
We hope that UW students
  • Wont be embarrassed of who they are or what they
    are seeking-
  • Difficult position, half way between an
adolescent and taking on the role of being an
    adult
  • Real struggle in college is to find and be
yourself. No need to pretend to be someone you
    are not
  • Secret of college life is for a student to find
something he or she loves to do, learn to do it
well, and find someone who will pay them to do
    it
  • We want them to actualize their full potential.
May take time to find that niche
  • Encourage them to communicate with their families
on a regular basis. DOS Early Alert Program!
    and
  • Families can help by becoming involved and
keeping in supportive contact with their son or
daughter and involvement through Cowboy Parents.
