Getting your team started!
  • Recruit the students (never too few!!)
  • Find an advisor at school (teacher, parent, or
    administrator)
  • Make contact with another established
    coach/league official
  • Get a parent involved early

Building a presence at school
  • Form an official club
  • ASB account (hopefully funded?)
  • Advertise introductory meetings
  • Lunchtime or after school
  • Students can use flyers/bulletins
  • Work speaking assignments into your curriculum

Taking Care of Business
  • Coach/advisor who accompanies students to
    tournaments must have
  • Medical forms for all students entered (see
    school/district requirements)
  • Knowledge of who is competing
  • Knowledge of who is judging
  • CFL tournaments Youll work on staff -- not as a
    judge.
  • Invitationals You can judge.

  • League dues (required before competing)
  • CFL 75 new schools can apply for grants
  • CHSSA dues (required)
  • 100 per school no personal checks or cash!
  • Deadline December 1st (Late penalties apply)
  • Natl Forensic League 99 (required to record
    NFL points and to qualify for National Champs)

Registering for CFL Tournaments
  • Use Joy of Tournaments website (www.joyoftournamen
    ts.com)
  • Create JOT account for your school
  • Locate tournament on the home page calendar (2-3
    weeks before it happens)
  • Click Registration
  • Add students under Squad
  • Select students/events from Entries
  • Contact Paul Pinza or Tournament Director (see
    calendar) re problems.

CFL Tournaments JUDGES
  • All schools must provide judges proportional to
    their entries
  • 14 speech, 13 L/D debaters
  • 12 debate teams, 112 congress entries
  • Establish a rotation within your team
  • Families work in shifts each covers 1-2
    rounds.
  • Families rotate tourneys and get weekends off.
  • Register judges via Joy of Tournaments
  • Ask faculty, local college students, other
    coaches if you come up short.
  • Contact Paul Pinza or Tournament Director (see
    calendar) re problems.

CFL Tournaments FEES
  • Sept.-Feb. 20
  • 5 for a student congress entry
  • 10 for a solo entry (LD debate, most speech)
  • 20 for a team entry (Duo, most debates)
  • State Qualifiers (Feb. 21-Mar. 14)
  • All fees are double
  • Students must commit to attending State
    Championships if they compete in qualifier.
  • Invitationals usually charge at least 10/20 ---
    some have much higher fees.
  • Personal checks should include your school and
    tournaments date, site. home
