2PACE BOWLING REMEDIAL DRILLS
In recent years there has been a lot of research
conducted into the effects of fast bowling,
resulting in a lot of new technical information.
This information is valuable and necessary
however it is complex and may cause some
confusion to junior coaches when coaching fast
bowling. The aim of these drills is to provide
coaches with a simple sequence designed to
rectify common faults in young fast bowlers to
ensure they are as safe and as efficient as
possible. In most cases the faults are entrenched
in the bowlers sub-conscious and therefore
require repetitious work at reduced pace, away
from the competitive environment, in order to
re-train muscle memory. On some occasions the
drills will produce instant benefits, however
more often than not changes will feel
uncomfortable at first and the bowlers pace
control may deteriorate before improvement occurs.
3THESE REMEDIAL DRILLS HAVE THE BOWLING ACTION
BROKEN INTO 3 PHASES
- 1. Run-up (Momentum)
- 2. Delivery (Movement Timing)
- 3. Follow-through (Leg Drive)
4Purpose To produce a direct approach to the
crease and ensure all movements are towards the
target line.
RUN-UP PHASE DRILL 1
- KEY POINTS
- Arm movements towards target line
- Feet and knee movements towards target line
- Head still
- Shoulders steady
5RUN-UP PHASE DRILL 2
Purpose To assist in producing efficient forward
momentum.
- KEY POINTS
- Elbows bent (hands high)
- Forward lean through to take-off foot impact
- Small steps at first, gradually increasing in
size through to optimum speed
6RUN-UP PHASE DRILL 3
Purpose To ensure all body movements continue
towards the target line through the delivery
stride.
- KEY POINTS
- Back leg steps through to delivery stride
continuing towards the target line - Front foot also remains with the marked
boundaries and works towards the same target line
7DELIVERY (Movement)
Double Pendulum Model
Inefficient unsafe _______________
Efficient Safe _______________
Natural movement pattern
8DELIVERY (Movement) DRILL 4
Purpose To practice the double pendulum movement
pattern.
? CORRECT PROCEDURE The scrunchy should be
projected downwards.
? INCORRECT PROCEDUREThe scrunchy will be
projected forward.
9DELIVERY (Movement) DRILL 5
Purpose To demonstrate the hand/ball speed that
can be generated by utilising a double pendulum.
STEP 1 - Place ball on forearm pull elbow down
and extend arm to catch the ball.
STEP 2 As in Step 1 and continue action to bowl
the ball.
10DELIVERY (Movement) DRILL 6
Purpose To ensure bowlers bowl over (not around)
trunk. This is achieved by vertical arm
movements only, towards target line.
- KEY POINTS
- Bowling hand gathers on chin, elbow moves
vertically down to hip, and arm extends around to
a high release point - Non bowling arm moves straight up and then
straight down to front hip - (This also maintains all movements towards the
target line)
11DELIVERY (Movement) DRILL 7
Purpose To develop the feeling of bowling over
the trunk to attain the optimum release point.
SIDE ON VIEW Mark a target 3 metres in front of
bowling position and have bowler bowl at it.
REAR VIEW Ensure the ball travels directly
towards target line to indicate appropriate arm
movements.
FRONT ON VIEW Ensure efficient front arm
movement (straight up and straight down).
12DELIVERY (Timing) - 1 DRILL 8
Purpose To coincide the timing of back foot
impact (BFI) with the gather of the bowling
hand on the chin.
1. Standing start at BFI (ball at chin).
2. One step and bowl (starting on take-off foot
1).
NOTE Isolate and repeat each stage until the
bowler feels comfortable and confident with the
gather of the bowing hand on chin at BFI.
Additional stages may be added is necessary.
13 DELIVERY (Timing) - 2 DRILL 8
Purpose To coincide the timing of back foot
impact (BFI) with the gather of the bowling
hand on the chin (tie in with verbal cues ie. 1
is ball on chin).
3. Two steps and bowl (2-1).
4. Jog in and bowl (6-5-4-3-2-etc).
NOTE Isolate and repeat each stage until the
bowler feels comfortable and confident with the
gather of the bowing hand on chin at BFI.
Additional stages may be added is necessary.
14FOLLOW THROUGH (Leg Drive) DRILL 9
Purpose To develop a powerful and well timed
push out of the back leg designed to assist
with forward momentum and produce an upright
bowling position.
- KEY POINTS
- Back leg lands slightly bent then pushes directly
down the target line assisting the bowler to
maintain an upright delivery position (cues
think tall push nose at target)
15FOLLOW THROUGH (Leg Drive) DRILL 10
Purpose To ensure a full hip and shoulder
rotation where the hips match the alignment of
the shoulders.
SIDE ON VIEW Back leg moves up and over
obstacle while remaining along the target line.
FRONT ON VIEW After driving up and over the
obstacle, the back leg lands on opposite side of
target line.
16MEASURING A RUN-UP DRILL 11
Purpose To produce a suitable length run-up that
suits the individual.
- KEY POINTS
- Bowler must be warm
- Keep in mind the principals of an efficient
run-up - Conduct in an open area (safety)
- SEQUENCE
- Beginning on a specified mark, the bowler
closes eyes and runs in and bowls when
comfortable. The Coach accurately marks the
front foot impact position. Repeat this process
until a pattern develops. The bowler should then
step this out several times to ensure accuracy.
