  • What is a foundation? What does it do?
  • Lowest structural component of a building upon
    which all other members rest
  • How are foundations built?
  • Depends on the nature of the soil, slope of the
    terrain, the size and weight of the structure,
    the climate, building laws, and relationship of
    the floor line to the grade line.

  • Footings- the bases of foundations and foundation
    walls.
  • Two Types
  • Continuous-extend under walls, distribute weight
    around perimeter foundation often wider than
    foundation wall
  • Individual-support vertical structural members

    edge of the slab.
