10First Things First The Last
- The Last is a pattern for the design of a shoe
- Its shape determines if that style shoe will fit
the shape of your foot! - It is based on the distance from the ball of the
foot to the end of the toes! - If the Last does not represent the size and
shape of your foot, the shoe will not be
comfortable for you! - Why, then, pick fashion over comfort?
11Shoe Lasts are (Patterns) to design the Shoe!
- The shoes fit depends on the design, shape, and
volume of the Last. - The Last must represent the anatomy of your foot,
and must give the finished shoe a pleasing and
fashionable appearance and at the same time fit
the shape of your foot! - Select what feels comfortable on your feet!
- Choose the style that is closest shape of your
foot!
123 Very Different Shoes Made from the Same Last
13That Foot Measuring Thingy
- Everyones seen it, but do you know the correct
technical name of this tool?
14- In 1925, a man named Charles F. Brannock invented
this device for measuring feet. He patented it in
1928. - Prior to the Brannock Device, the shoe industry
measured feet length with a yard stick. Getting a
good fit was a real puzzle. - The Brannock Device made it possible for people
to buy ready made shoes to fit their feet in both
width and length,
15Its Time to Measure Your Feet (did everyone wear
clean socks???)

- Did everyone finish?
- What did you find?
- Any surprises?
- Any other factors to think about?
- Of course, to get the best fit you will need to
pick a style to match the shape of your foot, and
then try them on.
17What is a Size?
- It Is Simply a Number in the Lining of Your Shoes
or a Tag on Your Shirt. - Notice That This Shoe has 4 Sizes!
18What Is a Fit?
- Measured From the Second Joint on Your Big Toe to
Your Heel. - Uses the Brannock Device to Determine the Best
Educated Guess to Start With a Size. - The fit may be longer or wider, depending on how
your foot feels in the shoe. - Shoes must give you enough room to wiggle your
toes, and so that they are not cramped. - Choose a pattern that looks to be the same shape
as your feet.

Not Your Toe Length
Measure From Heel to Ball
20Fit From The Start
- A shoe should feel good when it is put on your
foot! - It should have a very little break in period!
21My Heel Slips!
- Your heels might slip up and down at first, but
should not slip more than a quarter of an inch.
More than that, and the shoe is too big. Try a
different size or width! - You might find that your heels slip up and down
in your shoes after a few months. Tighten the
laces closest to the ball of your foot, then lace
the rest of them so you are comfortable!
22Wrong Sized Shoes Cost
- Do you have shoes (money) sitting in your closet
or locker because they dont fit right?? - What would happen if
- your shoes fit badly?
- Would you work more slowly?
- Would you make mistakes?
- Would your back, legs, or feet ache?
- Would you hurt yourself or a co-worker because
youre in pain and not focused?
23So, What Have We Learned?
- Choose Your Shoes by Fit, Not by Size!
- The Last Determines Whether Your Shoe Will Fit!
- Shoe Sizes Fit Differently, So Measure Heel to
Ball - Try on the Shoe to Be Sure of the Correct Fit
- You Want Your Shoe to Be Flexible at the Ball of
Your Foot, and in Tune With Your Foot
