Foundation, Comic Relief, and the people of
Malawi.

  • Situated in South East Africa
  • Border with- Mozambique (East South), Tanzania
    (North) and Zambia (West)
  • Land locked country
  • Covers 118484 sq. Kms, with one quarter occupied
    by Lake Malawi
  • Attained independence in 1964 became republic in
    1966.
  • Population 12 million..

Malawi HIV/AIDS and OVC situation
  • 14.4 HIV prevalence rate - Cause of over 70,000
    deaths annually
  • Has reduced average life expectancy from 45 to
    38.5 years
  • 1 Million living with HIV/AIDS virus, 58 are
    women girls
  • Approx. 1 million orphans and vulnerable children
    (OVCs) increased child headed households
  • Highest death toll age group 15- 49 more
    elderly people looking after grandchildren

  • Access to treatment of the most common childhood
    illnesses (eg, diarrhoea, worms, malaria,
    respiratory infection, TB)
  • Access to prevention, care, and treatment for
    HIV/AIDS, including all aspects of ART
  • Palliative care across the continuum of care HIV
    specific and other chronic illnesses.
  • Prevention and management of malaria.

Facing challenges, grabbing opportunities
  • Slow pace of development of programs- children
    cant wait!!
  • Limited numbers of skilled personnel,
    particularly in the Health sector
  • There are quite a few unknowns-e.g.. impact of
    universal primary education
  • There is available funding in Malawi to
    compliment FCFC funding
