of the broader strategy to achieve the
development objectives of the eThekwini

Outer West Area
  • Investigation of traffic and transportation
    issues related to increased residential and
    commercial development in the Outer West Area.
  • Scope of investigation
  • Outer West Local Operational Entity.
  • Local road network.
  • Analyse existing infrastructure with existing
    traffic.
  • Analyse existing infrastructure with approved
    developments
  • Develop and analyse improvements required to
    cater for approved developments.
  • Develop and analyse improvements required to
    cater for planned (not approved) developments.
  • Develop ultimate network to cater for vision for
    the area.
  • Rapidly developing residential node some 40km
    west of Durban CBD.
  • Development type includes greenfield and
    redevelopment of existing developed sites.
  • Employment nodes to the east include Pinetown,
    Durban, SIB and Northern areas.
  • Increased east-west tidal flows exacerbates
    current traffic problems on local and larger
    metropolitan road network

to optimise development release and capital

Transportation Status QuoThe Outer West area
largely functions as a residential feeder to the
eastern employment nodes and hence is subject to
tidal flows with the major direction of travel to
and from the Durban central business area.
