Title: Preferred Customer Meeting

1
Preferred Customer Meeting NARSA 2001 Las Vegas,
NV April 3, 2001
2
Meeting Agenda
  • Welcome
  • Opportunities with Aluminum Radiators
  • Sales and Marketing Orientation
  • 2001 Valued Customer Container Program
  • Summary

3
Aluminum Radiator Failures
  • What causes an Aluminum radiator fail prematurely?

4
Types of Failures
5
1. Pitting Corrosion
  • Pitting Corrosion
  • Indication pinholes often found on the
undersides of tubes at the bottom of a cross flow
    radiators.
  • Process when the vehicle is parked, highly
corrosive deposits settle on the tubes and begin
the corrosive process causing them to leak.
  • Prevention Flush and refill with properly mixed
antifreeze distilled water when replacing a new
radiator or servicing the cooling system.

Services, Australia

Galvanic Corrosion
  • Galvanic Corrosion
  • Indication leak hole with unevenly corroded area
    around
  • Process Highly cathodic coolant contaminants
exchanges electrons with aluminum tubes. They are
    relatively slowly corroded away.
  • Prevention Flush and refill with properly mixed
antifreeze distilled water when replacing a new
    radiator

2. Contaminated/Degraded Coolant
  • Indication Scale, deposit, dirt, or sand plugged
inside tubes. Tube ends at header eroded away.
  • Process Scale from inside cooling system starts
depositing inside tubes blocking coolant passage.
OR abrasive deposit erodes tubes to leak.
  • Prevention Flush and refill with properly mixed
antifreeze distilled water when replacing a new
    radiator

Preventive method against Corrosion, Plugged
tube, and Erosion
  • Flush
  • Thoroughly flush the system. Power flush is
    recommended
  • Chemical cleaner if used must be alkaline instead
    of acidic
  • Refill
  • Use antifreeze that meets or exceeds ASTM or SAE
    standards
  • Tap water in some areas that contains chlorides
and other mineral as found in hard water is not
    suitable as coolant makeup water

14
3. Electrolysis
  • Indication Very localized leak at tube to header
joints near the inlet and outlet pipes. Traces of
Aluminum hydroxide, gray or brownish residue.
  • Process Loose ground from an electrical device
causing electric current to seek ground through
the radiator. Leak occurs in a matter of weeks.
  • Prevention Detect the loose ground and ground it
    properly.

Electrolysis (contd)

Pty. Ltd, Australia
16
Electrolysis detection
  • Use a voltmeter capable of reading one-tenth of
    a volt
  • Start the engine, turn on all electrical
components, and connect one test lead to battery
ground and submerge the other into coolant
  • Any reading indicates the presence of
    Electrolysis
  • To pinpoint to source of electricity, turn off
each component until the meter reads zero.
  • OR connect a jumper wire to battery ground and
the other end to each component momentarily until
    the meter reads zero
  • Once electrolysis is corrected, flush and refill
    the system

17
Preventive methods
  • The best preventive method to corrosion and
erosion is to do reverse power flush and to
refill the cooling system with proper antifreeze
    and water mixture.
  • If the radiator keeps failing in a matter of
    weeks, check for electrolysis.

18
Conclusion
  • All of these failures can be prevented just by
taking a few simple steps when replacing a new
    radiator
  • This helps reduce the number of comebacks which
    save time and money
  • Also it builds your shops reputation as a
    professional installer
