Title: Resolution Writing

1
Resolution Writing
2
The Heading
  • In the upper left hand corner, you write your
committee, the sponsors (countries creating the
    resolution), and the topic.
  • You may include a heading, but most conferences
    do not require one.
  • Address the resolution to the UN organ your
    committee is in.
  • For example, if you are in 6th Legal, you would
    write The General Assembly,

3
The Context
  • The resolution is divided into
  • 2-4 preambles
  • More than 3 operatives
  • Remember to skip a line between each preamble and
    operative

4
What is a Preamble?
  • A preamble is a statement that ends with a comma
that states why the resolution is being written,
past resolutions the current resolution complies
with, and why the delegates are concerned about
    the issue.
  • Preambles are words that usually end in ed or
ing such as determined, acknowledging, and
    stressing
  • Also, preambles must be underlined and end with a
    comma.

5
Operatives
  • Operatives are the main course of your
    resolution.
  • They include your caucus groups solutions to the
    problem in great detail.
  • Operatives are numbered and can be followed by
    sub-operatives which are lettered.
  • If you are writing a sub-operative, include more
than one. IF you only have one, just include it
    in your main operative.
  • Operatives end with a semi-colon.
  • Operatives are underlined and end in es
  • For example, requests, emphasizes, and
    recommends

6
Operative Example
  • 1. Recommends that all novices follow the
provided instructions in the previous slide for
    the following purposes
  • a.) to avoid mistakes,
  • b.) to make your novice trainers look better
    because it shows that they
  • i.) taught you well,
  • ii.) know what they are talking about

7
Ending
  • End your last operative in a period because
resolutions are only one sentence, if you didnt
    already notice.

8
Helpful Suggestions
  • Be specific about your resolution. You want your
plan to be plausible and well-thought -out.
  • Include details such as
  • Funding (the World Bank is NOT the source for all
money. Stick more to NGOs and private donors)
  • a timeframe for which each step or resolution
as a whole should be completed
  • ensure the implementation of the resolution
  • Who will fulfill the task in your resolution
(I.e. refugees need a mental health center, who
    will provide the psychiatrists?)

9
REMINDER
  • If you are not in the Security Council, then you
CANNOT declare the UN military to go to war. You
can only recommend the Security Council to
consider sending the troops to war.
  • Always be mindful of what committee you are in
    and your committees limits.
