Sink or float? Water pushing things upward gives
objects the ability to float. Both force and
buoyancy are needed to allow floating. Pushes and
pulls are called forces. Water or air with an
upward force is called buoyancy. Many years ago,
boatbuilders studied objects in order to find out
how well they floated in water. Fish were also
studied and offered important clues about
buoyancy.
