Individuals who carry most of their weight in the
trunk of their bodies, tend to have a higher risk
for developing type II diabetes.

Age
Diabetes type II generally occurs in those above
40. However, incidence among children, teenagers,
and young adults is increasing.

Family History
Having an immediate blood relative with type two
diabetes increases the risk.

History of Diabetes in Pregnancy
Around 40 of the women who develop gestational
diabetes, develop type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10
years after giving birth.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Pre-diabetes
Having a blood glucose level that is higher than
normal, but not high enough to be classified as
diabetes. The cutoff for pre-diabetes is a
fasting blood sugar of 100 mg/dl. Fasting levels
between 100 and 126 mg/dl are diagnosed as
pre-diabetes and a fasting level of 126 mg/dl and
up is diabetes.

High Blood pressure
A blood pressure reading below 120/80 is
considered normal A blood pressure reading of
140/90 mmhg or higher is considered high
(abnormal).

High Cholesterol
More than 40 of people diagnosed with diabetes
also present high cholesterol levels.

Program, diabetes is one of the most serious
health issues affecting Latinos in the United
States. In fact, diabetes is the sixth-leading
cause of death among Latinos and the
fourth-leading cause of death among Latina and
Latino elders.
