What is Diabetes?
  • Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high
blood sugar. There are multiple types of
    diabetes Type 1 , Type 2, Pre-diabetes and Gestat
    ional Diabetes
  • The hormone insulin is responsible for ensuring
the sugar from the blood enters into your cells
to be stored or used for energy
  • In type 2 diabetes, your metabolism is damaged
and sugar accumulates in your blood instead of
entering into your cells. As a result, your blood
sugar levels increase beyond normal levels.

3
What Are the Risk Associate With Diabetes?
  • There are risk factors you should consider
    including
  • Age Type 2 diabetes occurs most often in
    middle-aged and older people.
  • Waist circumference Researchers found that
overweight people with a large waist had a
similar risk of developing diabetes to those who
    were diagnosed as clinically obese.
  • BMI A BMI that ranges from 25 to 29.9 is
considered overweight. And a BMI of 30 or higher
falls into the obese category. Type 2 diabetes
and obesity are generally very tightly linked,
having a high BMI can be an indicator that you
    should be tested for diabetes.

  • Assessment of physical activity Not having
regular physical activity impairs control of
blood sugar levels, suggesting that inactivity
may play a key role in the development of Type 2
    diabetes for many people.
  • Family history Family health history is an
important risk factor for developing type 2
diabetes. Most of us with type 2 diabetes have a
family member such as a mother, father,
brother, or sister with the disease already.

5
What Are The Different Types of Diabetes?
  • There are a number of different types of
diabetes, some more common than others
  • The most common form of diabetes in the general
population is type 2 diabetes, which often
develops from pre-diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is
more common in children and gestational diabetes
is a form of diabetes that can occur during
    pregnancy
  • The other types of diabetes includes the
    following
  • Prediabetes
  • Gestational Diabetes

6
Type 1 Diabetes Vs Type Diabetes
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that
attacks and destroys the beta cells in your
pancreas, the organ that produces insulin in your
    body.
  • Insulin is the hormone used to control and
regulate your blood sugar. About 10 of all
people with diabetes have Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes strikes when your body becomes
resistant to insulin, causing abnormally high
blood sugar levels to build up in your body.
  • Its the most common form of diabetes

7
What is Pre-diabetes?
  • Pre-diabetes is a metabolic condition and a
growing worldwide problem that is closely related
to obesity. If undiagnosed or untreated,
pre-diabetes can develop into type 2 diabetes.
  • Pre-diabetes means that blood sugar levels are
higher than normal but, theyre not yet high
enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. That means
your blood sugar level is 100-125 mg/dL, with an
    HBA1c range of 5.7 to 6.4.
  • The increasing number of new cases of
pre-diabetes presents a national concern as it
carries large scale implications towards the
future burden on healthcare in India. India has
seen dramatic changes in the last 25 years.
Urbanization, an increase in wealth, and a more
sedentary lifestyle have all increased and
    contributed to the disease.

8
What is Type 1 diabetes?
  • Type 1 diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes,
is a chronic condition when the pancreas produces
little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed
to allow sugar to enter your cells to produce
    energy.
  • Different factors, including genetics and certain
kinds of viruses, may contribute to type 1
diabetes. Although type 1 diabetes usually
appears during childhood or your teenage years,
it can also sometimes develop in adults
  • The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown.
Usually, the bodys own immune system which is
designed to fight harmful bacteria and viruses
    mistakenly attacks insulin-producing beta cells
in your pancreas. Other possible causes include
genetics and exposure to viruses or other
    environmental factors.

9
What is Type 2 diabetes?
  • In type 2 diabetes, your metabolism is damaged
and sugar accumulates in your blood instead of
entering into your cells, causing high blood
sugar levels. With type 2 diabetes, your body
either resists the effects of insulin an
important hormone that regulates how sugar enters
into your cells from your blood or doesnt
produce enough insulin to maintain normal sugar
    levels
  • There is a lot written about type 2 diabetes
causes but genetics and lifestyle factors, such
as what you eat, being overweight and inactive,
    play a role.

10
Is Type 2 diabetes curable?
  • Contrary to popular belief, you no longer need to
worry about type 2 diabetes being a lifelong
disease. Medical research shows that type 2
    diabetes can be reversed.
  • Diabetes reversal means that your high blood
sugar levels have dropped to normal levels,
without medicines or injections, and all diabetes
    symptoms have stopped.
