• Discharge of Blood or CSF from nose or ears.
• Blown, unequal, or slow to respond pupils.
• Paralysis.
• Vomiting.
• Seizures.
• Obvious skull deformity.

Treatment

• Treatment for the head injured patient can begin
  at the time of the initial notification of the
  call.
• By having forethought and rapid decision making
  capabilities, the EMT may be able to make a huge
  difference in the prognosis of the head injured
  patient before they even arrive.

Airway Control

• Airway management may be difficult due to the
  clenching of the head injury patients jaw.
• Xylocaine may be administered to blunt increased
  ICP during endotracheal intubation.

Treatment

• Cervical spine movement restriction.
• Ensure adequate breathing and delivery of 100
  oxygen.
• Assist ventilation's.
• If allowed by local protocol, hyperventilate at a
  rate of 24-30 breaths per minute.
