Title: Avalanches

1
Avalanches
  • By Michael and Connor

2
What is it
  • An Avalanche is loose snow that falls down a
mountain side crushing almost everything in its
    path.

3
When it occurs
  • Although Avalanches can occur on any slope given
the right conditions, in the United States
certain times of the year and in certain
locations are naturally more dangerous than
others. Winter time from December to April is
when most Avalanches occur. The highest number of
deaths occurs in January, February, and March.

4
How it happens or why
  • Snow is deposited in big layers as winter
progresses. These layers may have unsimilar
properties and an Avalanche occurs when one layer
    slides on another.

5
Prevention or Protection
  • If you are caught in Avalanche yell and let go of
your ski poles snowboard etc. to make yourself
lighter. Use swimming motions thrusting upward to
try to stay on the surface.

6
Examples
Large powder avalanche crossing Milford Highway,
New Zealand. Sections of the highway along the
valley floor are just visible on either side of
the powder cloud.
