Planning the Interview

• Research background info and details
• Identify your goals
• Plan your questions
• Request the interview

Conducting the Interview

• Start with ice-breakers and easy questions
• Ask open-ended questions(not yes/no)
• Keep questions brief and one topic per question
• Use eye contact
• Ask follow-up questions
• Thank and end on a good note

Taking Notes

• Dont forget to take notes!
• Develop a shorthand
• Dont be afraid to ask to repeat quotes
• CONCENTRATE
• Use pauses to let yourself catch up
• Write down what you see and feel
• Verify vital info, spellings and facts

If you use a tape recorder

• Practice at home before interview
• Check batteries and tapes
• Get permission
• Dont look at tape recorder during interview
• Set counter to 000
• TAKE NOTES ANYWAY

After the Interview

• Immediately after interview, read notes
• Fill in incomplete thoughts and sentences
• Write down your feelings and perceptions about
  what you heard and saw
• Mark areas that need more information
• Mark great quotes
• Send thank you email to interviewee and ask for
  further info if necessary
