3About the Exhibition
In modern electronic communications, information
is transferred using a combination of text and
photographs. Therefore today, abilities to read
and communicate using photographs are as
important as traditional reading and writing
skills. It is argued that the illiterate of the
future might not be those who cannot read, but
those who cannot see. Visual Language in the
Community is an ongoing project, designed
specifically for the Neve Yosef Community Center.
It has two objectives. First, to encourage all
the community children, youth and adults to
be active participants in visual communications,
by enhancing their abilities to understand,
handle and manipulate visual information. Second,
by introducing a common language, the language of
visuals, a new channel of communication is opened
through which the culturally diverse members of
the Neve Yosef community can meet each
other. Through the Eyes is an exhibition of
computer manipulated photographs made by the
children of Neve Yosef in the Intel Computer
Clubhouse. Using image-manipulation software on
images downloaded from the Internet, or scanned
at the clubhouse, the children produced artwork
that describes proverbs from their country of
origin. The project is planned and implemented by
Dr. Janet Gino, a researcher in the field of
visual communications and a long time resident of
Neve Yosef. Janet was born in England and arrived
in Israel more than 20 years ago, she teaches art
appreciation at the Haifa museum, along with her
work as a mentor in workshops given by the
Israeli foreign office.
