WHERE ARE WE?
IES Urola Ikastola Azkoitia-Azpeitia BHI
www.urola.org is a school located and distributed
in two neighbouring towns 5 minutes' drive
distant Azkoitia (13,000 inhabitants) and
Azpeitia (14,000 inhabitants) in The Basque
Country-Euskal Herria (north of Spain and south
of France). Our valley is surrounded by
mountains, and 30 minutes from the Bay of
Biscay. The main nearby cities are San
Sebastián/Donostia (40 kms), Bilbao/Bilbo (70
kms), Vitoria-Gasteiz (70 kms), Pamplona/Iruñea
(100 kms) and 60 kms from the border with the
French speaking Basque Country (Biarritz/Miarritze
, Baiona/Bayonne).

Urola Ikastola Azkoitia-Azpeitia BHI is a public
school run by the Education Department of the
Basque Government. Our students are 12-16 in
Secondary Compulsory Education and 16-18 in Post
Secondary Compulsory Education. After graduating
some of our students go to university or some of
them also opt for Vocational Training
(Administration Management and Finance Woodwork
and Furniture Production Production by
Mechanized Systems. We are about 600 students and
100 teachers altogether.
  • The education language in our school is Basque
    the mother tongue of most of our students- but
    all our students can also speak Spanish fluently.
    Basque and Spanish are the official languages in
    this part of our country. Students also learn
    English (compulsory) and French (optional).

2006-2007 Geograpical and Language description of
the Urola Valley and the Valley of the River
Tornionjoki COMENIUS 1.2.
  • In October 2006 the Euro students visited
    Basque Country for two weeks and were
    accommodated in Basque homes in December 2006
    the Basque students headed for Finland in
    rotation.
  • The co-operation between the Finnish and Basque
    schools Tornion yhteislyseon lukio/Eurolukio
    and the Urola Ikastola of Azkoitia-Azpeitia was
    made possible by the Socrates Comenius 1.2
    student exchange programme. The project 1.2 is
    mainly about improving cultural interaction and
    networking the European schools. It is supported
    by the EU.
  • For us the project was rewarding in every
    respect new experiences of different culture and
    country, friends. As much as we had fun with
    Socrates Comenius 1.2 we hope this presentation
    will give you useful information about the
    appearence of geographical and linguistic
    environment in the Basque Country and the valley
    of River Tornio enjoy!

  • Secondary pupils from various EU countries will
    have co-operated enabling the realisation of a
    new subject concentrating on Europe as a separate
    focus for secondary education.

    modules based on the above mentioned topic,
    drawing on their own current life experiences,
    lifestyles and ways of thinking.

  • Secondary teachers from the various EU countries
    will have been able to exchange experiences of
    the following

  • the organisation of teaching methods which have
    taken into consideration a combination of both

The tasks What did the students have to do?
  • Each group had to prepare a questionnaire for the
    interviews. The questionnaire had to take into
    account, at least the following factors general
    knowledge of Europe, attitudes and skills or
    competences necessary for an European education.
  • Agree on a common questionnaire.
  • Answer the questionnaire themselves and present
    the outcome.
  • Interview parents, teachers, members of the
    school management and businessmen using the
    questionnaire.
  • Video tape some of the interviews.
  • Each group had to present the final results of
    the interviews in digital and written format. The
    video interviews didnt have to be edited by them.
