  • As a discipline is included in
  • Colleges of Agriculture
  • Department of Horticulture
  • Department of Plant Science
  • Colleges of Natural Resources/Forestry
  • Departments of Forestry
  • Department of Recreation
  • Departments of Natural Resources

  • Usually the same one faculty member
  • A few extension agents or faculty in supporting
    disciplines (plant pathology, entomology, etc)
  • Except at The Ohio State University

  • Why Trees Matter

6
Urban Forestry Education
  • Where do degree programs exist?
  • Teaching schools (4 year)
  • UW-Stevens Point (2 faculty)

7
Urban Forestry Education
  • Where do most of our Urban Foresters come from?
  • Horticulture/Plant Science, Landscape
    Architecture
  • Forestry, Natural Resources, Recreation
  • Missing key tools that they need on the job
  • Diagnostics, Management, Urban Systems
  • Hit and miss with on the job training or outreach

8
Possibilities
  • Outside the academic box

A New Model for Post-Graduate Education
9
Where Are We Going?
Connect expertise, education and outreach through
an International Program
10
The Model
  • Enhance traditional and non-traditional
educational and research efforts in Urban
Forestry by connecting the Faculty and their
specialties to the bigger playing field.
  • Collaborative research
  • Community-based research
  • Education in all aspects of Urban Forestry in one
    place

Who are we?
  • Currently

12
Who are we?
Joe Boggs Example
13
Is there any data on water percolation through
different organic soils and colloidal structure?
Need for engineering training for water quality
efforts in Cincinnati.
Ask John Lloyd, I think he knows something about
soil.
I know there is data out there, but not with the
new Silva cells and CU soils, maybe we should
collect some. Bryant would have a better
perspective.
There is plenty of data on engineered soils, but
not with impacts of organic matter.
14
Joe gets his limited answer for the training
session and then works with Bryant and John to
design the Cincinnati project into a research
trial
Data collected from the Cincinnati Project will
be distributed through UFI channels to the
community of researchers and practitioners in
2011-2012.
Coordinated Research and Outreach
