Title: Computer Usage

1
Computer Usage
  • Reminders of basic computer operation at Matoaca
    Middle School

2
Logging In
  • Be sure to use the new directions for logging in.
  • You do NOT have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete anymore.

3
Screensaver
  • When the screen saver engages, the computer is
    not locked!
  • If you plan to be away from your computer, you
need to click on START and choose either LOGOFF
    or RESTART

4
Shutdown
  • As before, you do NOT have to shut your computer
    off every day.
  • You should, however, either LOGOFF or RESTART
the computer before you leave in the afternoon.

5
Restarting Computers
  • ALL computers should be restarted at least once a
day to keep them working at their optimum level
you may want to do this more often if you notice
    your computer becoming sluggish.

6
Shutting Down Your Computer
  • Click on START
  • Choose Shut Down
  • Click on Shut down the computer?
  • Press ENTER

7
Students
  • Only allow students to use your computer when
they are logged on as a student!!

8
Saving Files
  • Always save to your faculty folder or to the
    student folder.
  • If you save to your computers hard drive, you
    may lose any work saved!!

9
Training Materials
  • If you misplace any technology training materials
you can always print extra copies by going to the
Matoaca webpage and clicking on Technology
    Training Notes

10
Cleaning Your Computer
  • Simple routine cleaning will keep your computer
    working for a long time!

11
Cleaning Your Computer Monitor
  • Turn the monitor off and spray some window
cleaner on a soft cloth to clean the monitor
    screen.
  • Never spray cleaner directly on the monitor.

12
Cleaning Your Computer Keyboard
  • Turn the computer off and use a small amount of
alcohol on a q-tip or soft cloth to remove built
    up grime on the keyboard.
  • Turn the keyboard over and shake out any loose
    particles
  • Do not use commercial detergents or a vacuum
    cleaner!!

13
Cleaning Your Computer CPU
  • To clean the computer box itself, just use a dry
soft cloth to wipe off the dust.
  • If you need something stronger, you may use some
Isopropanol Alcohol on a soft cloth.

14
Covering Your Computer
  • Do not cover the computer unless you turn both
the computer and the monitor OFF.

15
Installing Software
  • In order to protect the entire school network,
only Mr. Thompson is allowed to install software
    on the computers.
  • Special network configurations are sometimes
necessary and Mr. Thompson must authorize any
installations that need to be made.

16
Internet Usage
  • The Chesterfield County server filters all
Internet traffic to prevent access to
    objectionable sites.
  • If you gain access to a site that you think
SHOULD be blocked contact Mr. Thompson with the
address of the web page in question.

17
Internet Usage
  • Students should never be left to browse the
Internet unattended. No filtering system is 100
    foolproof.
  • Since chat room conversations cannot be filtered,
chat rooms are totally off limits!! All chat
rooms have been blocked by the County Server but
if one gets through, please contact Mr. Thompson.

18
Power Outages
  • Turn your computer off immediately until the
    power has been restored.
  • Wait until the power has been restored for at
least a few minutes before restarting the
computer (sometimes it comes on and back off
    again).

19
Power Outages
  • When you restart the computer, you will probably
receive several warning from your computer that
it has been shut down incorrectly.
  • Allow the computer to complete any diagnostics it
needs to run before resuming normal operation.

20
Power Outages
  • Sometimes files that were open when the outage
occurred can be retrieved by simply opening the
application that was running at the time of the
    outage.
  • Just keep your fingers crossed and it may work
    for you!

21
Printing
  • I have setup various printing "zones" that you
    will be assigned to.
  • You will be assigned a default printer that you
will normally use but you will also have access
to some secondary printers as well.

22
Printing
  • To print to a secondary printer, you must click
    on "File" and choose "Print."
  • At that point, you can click on the "Printer
Name" box and choose one of the secondary
    printers listed.

23
Printing
  • Please do not print classroom sets on the
    printers.
  • Print one copy and take it to a copy machine for
    duplication.

24
Printing
  • Please limit color printing to only final copies.
  • Color ink is very expensive and we want to afford
everyone who absolutely needs to print in color
    the opportunity to do so.

25
Problems with your computer
  • Please report any problems with you computer
    immediately to Mr. Thompson
  • Email
  • Contact the office
  • Note in mailroom

26
Viruses
  • Computer viruses are easily transmitted on a
floppy disk without the user even knowing it.
  • For this reason, do not allow students to bring
diskettes from home to load files onto your
    computer.

27
Viruses
  • You should also be careful if you receive an
    attachment to an email message.
  • Viruses cannot infect a computer via email, but
if a file is attached to an email message and you
access it, you could infect your computer.

28
Viruses
  • If you receive an attachment from someone DO NOT
OPEN IT unless you know what it is ahead of time.
Contact Mr. Thompson to remove it.

29
Viruses
  • If you suspect a virus has infected your
    computer, contact Mr. Thompson immediately.
