What is a noun?
  • It names a person, place, or thing. A subject
    noun tells who or what the sentence is about.
  • Person Nouns mom, sister, classmate, Pauline
  • Place Nouns Target, home, Castleton, grocery
    store
  • Thing Nouns cat, rocket, car, it, Corvette

What is an adjective?
  • An adjective tells which one, what kind, or how
    many. It describes the noun or pronoun.
  • Try It!
  • The huge party was so much fun!
  • Whats the adjective?
  • adjective huge

What is an adverb?
  • An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another
    adverb. It tells how, when, or where. (Many
    times these words end in ly)

  • The tired brown bear fell down.

What makes a sentence?
  • A sentence must have a subject (noun) and a verb.
    It must make sense, start with a capital letter,
    and end with an end mark.
  • Try It!
  • Shopping at the mall.
  • Sentence or not a sentence?
  • Not a Sentence (There is no subject telling who
    went shopping.)

Is that noun common or proper?

Common Proper Nouns
  • Common nouns tell about general people, places,
    or things.
  • Proper nouns tell about specific people, places,
    or things. They should be capitalized.
  • Common Nouns dog, sister, museum, goldfish,
    hotdog, house, mom, teacher, crackers
  • Proper Nouns New York, Pizza Hut, Suzanne,
    Oakhill Mansion, Yoplait

  • Homophones are 2 words that sound the same, but
    are spelled differently and mean different things.

  • Declarative
  • Sentence Job Makes a statement
  • Im going to the store.
  • Command
  • Sentence Job Gives instructions
  • Shut the door.
