Title: MLA Works Cited Entries

1
MLA Works Cited Entries
  • Overview Books and Parts of Books

2
A Novel or Other Book(single author, first
edition)
  • Carter, Angela.  Wise Children.  New York
    Farrar, 1991.
  • We begin with the author, last name first, and a
    period.
  • Add the title, underlined or italicized, and a
    period.
  • Do NOT indicate editions for first editions.
  • Follow with the first city of publication listed
    and a colon.
  • Follow with the abbreviated name of the publisher
(see WGMLAD for a list of standardized
    abbreviations) and a comma.
  • Follow with the year and a period.

3
A Novel or Other Book(two authors, second
edition)
  • Jones, Greg, and Mark Smith. The Last Frontier.
    2nd ed.
  • New York Free, 2001.
  • Note that you do not reverse the name of the
second author and that you have a comma in front
of and even though you only have two names in
    the series.
  • When you underline a books title, dont
    underline the period.
  • Do not capitalize ed. for edition.
  • When an entry takes up more than one line, indent
the second and subsequent lines one tab.
  • All entries are double spaced.

4
An Anthology
  • Tatar, Maria, ed. The Classic Fairy Tales
    Texts, Criticism. New
  • York Norton, 1999.
  • When you have multiple works from an anthology,
you will have a simplified entry (a
cross-reference) for each work, and a separate
    entry for the anthology itself.
  • If there had been more than one editor, you would
write the abbreviations for editors after their
    names eds.
  • Subtitles of books are set off with colons.

5
Cross-References
  • Jacobs, Joseph. Molly Whuppie. Tatar 209-11.
  • Begin with the name of the author of the work in
    the anthology and a period.
  • Follow with the title of the story or essay from
the anthology enclosed in quotation marks and a
    period.
  • Follow with the anthology editors last name (no
period) and the inclusive page numbers of the
    work.
  • With numbers over a hundred, drop the first
numeral of the last page number as long as it is
in the same range of a hundred (213-78 instead of
    213-278).

6
Cross-References
  • Grimm, Jacob, and Wilhelm Grimm. Cinderella.
    Trans. Maria
  • Tatar. Tatar 117-22.
  • Sometimes a work from an anthology has been
translated from another language. In this case,
the editor of the anthology is also the
    translator of the work.
  • The translator follows the title of the work and
    the abbreviation for translator.
  • Note the periods after trans. and the
    translators last name.
  • Note the format of the works page numbers.

7
Cross-References
  • The Story of the Black Cow. Tatar 125-27.
  • If an essay or story in an anthology doesnt have
an author given, begin with the next item in
order for a works cited entry the title.
  • When you are preparing the works cited page, all
the entries on the page will be organized
    alphabetically.
  • Ignore a, an, and the when alphabetizing,
but retain them and leave them at the beginning
    of the title.
  • Remember that with a cross-reference, the
editors last name is used in place of the rest
    of the anthologys publication information.

8
Cross-References
  • Tatar, Maria, ed. The Classic Fairy Tales
    Texts, Criticism.
  • New York Norton, 1999.
  • ---. Introduction. Tatar ix-xvii.
  • Sometimes you use an introduction from an
    anthology.
  • Treat it like any other work, but do not enclose
the word introduction in quotation marks.
  • When you have the same person beginning more than
one entry on a works cited page, alphabetize by
the first important word of the title, and use
three hyphens for the persons name in all
    entries after the first.

9

    Irish Poetry. Ed.
  • Siobhan OConnor and Clair White. 3rd ed.
    Oxford Oxford
  • UP, 1987. 156-79.
  • Note that there is no s after Ed.remember
that in this position, Ed. stands for edited
    by, not editors.
  • Note that we do not reverse the names of either
editor because they are not being used to
    alphabetize the entry.
  • Note the UP after the second Oxfordthis
represents Oxford University Press. Such presses
are abbreviated to UP, not dropped in
    abbreviation.

12
One Work from an Anthology
  • Clarkson, Peter, et al. Quantum Physics Made
    Easy.
  • Introduction to Physics. Ed. Lois DeLancey et
    al.
  • 5th ed. Boston Collins, 1977. 298-312.
  • In this example, et al (part of a Latin phrase
meaning and all the others) is used to replace
the names of authors and editors when you have
    four or more.
  • Though you can write out all these names if you
wish, you can use et al after the first author
or editor of a work to save time and space.
Rememberthis is only when you have four or more
    names.

13
Points to Remember
  • When you have one work from an anthology, all the
information on the work and the anthology go into
    a single entry.
  • If you use more than one work, you should
cross-reference the editors last name takes the
place of all the anthologys publication
    information.
  • When you cross-reference, you must have a single
    entry for the anthology itself.
  • All entries on a works cited page need to be
    organized alphabetically.
  • All entries on a works cited page are double
spaced (but you should not add extra spaces
    between individual entries.
  • Indicate the edition number for any editions
    after the first.
  • Look up the list of abbreviations for publishers
    names in your text.
  • Pay attention to punctuation look at the
examples here and in your text.
