The Four Chambers of the Heart
  • Blood flows from the right atrium through a
one-way valve into the right ventricle.
  • The right ventricle contracts, forcing blood out
of the heart into a large artery.
  • Right Atrium
  • Right Ventricle

The Beat Continues
  • This artery forks, taking blood to the lungs
where the arteries branch into smaller and
smaller arteries. These lead to capillaries that
are next to tiny air sacs in the lungs.
  • The capillaries lead to veins that take the blood
    back to the heart.

The blood flows first into the left atrium and
then through a one-way valve into the left
ventricle.

  • Aorta
  • The Beat Goes On!
  • The left ventricle contracts and forces blood
    into the aorta.
  • Left Atrium
  • Left Ventricle

5
From the aorta, branching arteries lead into
capillaries. Here blood gives up oxygen to cells
and takes on carbon dioxide and other wastes.
  • The blood then returns via veins to the right
atrium of the heart, completing the cycle.
