TEKS
  • (7) History. The student understands how
political, economic, and social factors led to
the growth of sectionalism and the Civil War.
    The student is expected to
  • (b) Compare the effects of political, economic,
and social factors on slaves and free blacks
  • (c) Analyze the impact of slavery on different
    sections of the United States

4
  • The following websites have information on the
civil war and all of the events involving the
civil war. They all have pictures that the
students can use to visualize some of the
objects, people, and events that occurred. There
are some specific sites that are primarily about
African Americans in the Civil War and others
about the Civil War in general but also discuss
    African Americans.

5
  • As a teacher in the classroom there are several
student activities that you could have the
students participate in. I would give my
students the following list of websites and have
them research the information that is presented
    to them at these websites.

6
Student Activities
  • The students would state which sites were
    reliable and explain why.
  • The students could read diaries of slaves,
soldiers, nurses, and others and discuss the
similarities and differences between the two in
groups and how things would be like today if the
Civil War was going on now.
  • You could also have them do a skit about the
civil war and some of the notable people that
    participated in the war effort.

7
Student Activities
  • The student could write a compare and contrast
paper on how the African Americans and white
    peoples roles in the war.
  • They could also create a graph showing the
percentage of soldiers, spies, nurses, etc. that
where white or African American in the war.
  • The students can create maps of the Civil War and
the battles that let up the Civil War as a way
for the students to visualize the events.
  • Another activity would be for the students to
find and discuss objects that were used both in
the Civil War and now and the improvements that
have been made with our present war weapons.
