The Rates Maintenance and Route Analysis
modules of FAIS include the facilities necessary
to generate and administer rate quotes
negotiated between broker and carrier and broker
and shipper. WISL Billing is a separate product
that may be coupled with the above FAIS modules
to provide a billing facility based on automatic
rating.

Two of the key interactive routines of the
Route Analysis module, Rate Inquiry and Quote
Modelling, are illustrated by selecting the the
corresponding menu item. The Rates Maintenance
facility is also available to view as a demo from
the menu. WISL Billing is similar in format to
the rate inquiry routine but provides for
entering particulars of specific shipments for
the purpose of billing.

Freight Analysis Information System
The Freight Analysis Information System is a
collection of modules which addresses various key
logistical functions. FAIS capabilities range
from operational facilities such as interface
with order entry, consolidation and auditing to a
modelling facility that provides for specifying
"what if" scenarios of modified rates or shipping
characteristics. Implementation of the system is
available in a variety of module combinations
subject to your company's needs.

- Rates Recordkeeping
- Virtually any known structure of a quoted or
published rate may be recorded and accessed. - Shipping Interface
- Bill of lading information may be received from
another computer system or entered directly and
is rated automatically. The facilities may be
used to generate shipment documentation (bill of
lading/packing label). - Shipment Analysis
- Invoiced shipments are recorded and automatically
rated and checked for duplicates or overcharges.
The module provides for the collection of
additional data for subsequent analysis. - Route Analysis
- Data pertaining to a shipment may be entered in
order to determine the cost of the shipment. Best
rates reporting and routing guides may be
generated. - Consolidation
- Provides for assembling and consolidating loads
with the capability to generate a master bill of
lading upon completion. The module also provides
for reconciliation with carrier invoice and
apportioning of costs to component shipments.

16 The Rate Inquiry facility provides
automatic rating upon entry of the
characteristics of a shipment. A specific
carrier, a group of carriers, or all recorded
carriers may be considered. Service level and
region specifications can be used to restrict the
applicable quotes for the rate determination
process. This demonstration will follow a typical
rate inquiry for a single shipment.

The service level specification provides the
capability to differentiate rate quotes on the ba
sis of level of service. Usually the criteria is r
esponsiveness. Normally if the facility is utilize
d the quotes are classified in ascending order in
direct relation to the responsiveness in handling
the shipment. If level "2" is specified, then only
quotes categorized as "2" or numerically lower wo
uld be considered in rating the shipment. If no sp

36 Many rate quotations are generated as the
result of a brief telephone conversation. The
objective of the quote modelling facility is to
collect the necessary information, within the
context of a telephone discussion, to enable the
generation of a record that will permit the
production of a printed quote and allow automatic
rating. Quotes generated using this facility may
be maintained using the rates maintenance
module. In the following demonstration a
quote will be generated to illustrate the various
features of the facility.

In order to generate a piece quote, units must
be specified. In all cases the weight must be
specified as either a numeric value or "TL" for
truckload. The cubic volume of the shipment is
needed for cube quotes or for regular quotes whe
re weight is determined by multiplying volume by m
inimum density factor. The number of feet (cubi
c or linear) must be specified if a cube quote is
required. The Minimum Density Factor is the num
ber that is multiplied by the volume of the shipme
nt to determine the weight of the shipment for rat
ing purposes. The commodity may be specified by
entering a keyword(s) or entering the system ass
igned key. Choosing a commodity will display the c
ommodity class, which may be overriden by the use
r.
