The Digestive System
  • By Dina Brooks

What is the Digestive System
  • The digestive system is consisted of large hollow
muscles that enables their walls to move. That
movement causes the walls to move food and
liquids throughout the body and nutrients are
dissolved into the body during digestion

Mouth
  • The mouth secretes saliva that allows the
    swallowing process easier.
  • The mouth is where we start the digestive
    process.
  • We have different types of teeth that do
different jobs. We have ones that tear the food
and ones that chew the food.

Back to Question 2.
5
Esophagus
  • After the food is chewed up it is then swallowed.
The food goes down a tube called the esophagus.
Here the food is pushed. When the food
approaches a ring at the end, the muscles relax
so the food can pass to the next step.

Back to question 3.
6
Stomach...part one
  • The stomach has 3 mechanical tasks to do. First
the stomach has to store the swallowed food and
liquid. For this to happen the muscles in the
upper part of the stomach must relax and allow
large portions of swallowed material into the
    stomach

Back to question 4.
7
Stomach...part two
  • The second part of the stomach mixes up the food
and liquids. During this part there are also
juices produced by the stomach to make digestion
    easier.

Back to question 7.
8
Stomach...part three
  • The third part of the stomach, the lower part,
prepares the materials that were just mixed, and
slowly passes everything to the small intestine.

9
Small Intestine, Liver, and Pancreas
  • In the small intestine more digestion is
occurring. Here all materials are dissolved from
juices produced by the pancreas and the liver.
These contents are mixed and processed for
    further digestion

Back to question 5.
10
Large Intestine
  • The large intestine is used for storing food
    residues and to absorb water
  • The large intestine had about 5 gallons of fluid
pumped through daily which that fluid leads to
    reabsorbation.
  • The large intestine leads food material to the
    colon.
  • It has 6-8 contractions per day and sweeps
material all the way to the rectum.

Back to question 6.
11
Colon
  • All digested nutrients are absorbed through the
intestinal wall. What is left, unknown fiber,
older cells, and any undigested food particles,
all this is pushed to the colon and waste is
    discarded by bowel movements.
