4Academic Advising
SUNY
Operation Inform08
- Quality academic advising plays a role in
retaining students, keeping them on track and
minimizing the time-to-degree - All SUNY campuses provide academic advising to
students. - Academic advisors are faculty, professional
staff, and/or peers. - Advising maybe delivered via a students academic
college or major or may be program specific
(Honors and EOP). - Advising handbooks, online student resources,
student/advisor responsibilities and Ask an
Advisor or Virtual Advisor programs exist at
SUNY campuses.
5Finding a Major/Undeclared
SUNY
Operation Inform08
- Undeclared is a popular major at SUNY
- campuses! And, at most campuses it is ok
- to be undeclared.
- At many SUNY campuses, academic advising and
career services departments collaborate to advise
undeclared students. - Innovative programs include majors/information
fairs, interest and self-assessments, online
resources, handbooks, and courses/seminars. - Some campuses offer semester or year-long
exploratory programs.
6First-Year Experience (FYE) and Learning
Communities
SUNY
Operation Inform08
- FYE programs aid students in the transition to
college and enable them to connect with other
students, staff, faculty, and campus resources. - Goals of FYE programs are to increase levels of
academic engagement, student-to-student
interaction, faculty-to-student interaction,
student involvement on campus, and link
curriculum to co-curriculum. - Some SUNY campuses provide these experiences
through a credit course, seminar or learning
community while others assign a faculty, staff or
student mentor to new students. - Unique opportunities include sophomore, junior,
and/or senior experiences, reading programs,
skills workshops, and outdoor adventures prior to
the academic year.
7Career Placement and Internships
SUNY
Operation Inform08
Career planning centers help students evaluate
interests, abilities, experiences, and values.
These characteristics play an important role in
selecting a major, transfer school, and job
- All SUNY career centers aid students in finding
employment after graduation and many assist in
identifying internships for credit, pay, and/or
experience. - MonsterTRAK and self-assessment resources enable
students to use current technology to identify
internship and job opportunities, as well as
potential majors. - Many career centers continue to assist students
after graduation.
8English as a Second Language (ESL)
SUNY
Operation Inform08
ESL services vary greatly from campus to campus
and range from full programs to a series of
courses.
- Most ESL programs and services focus on
listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. - Innovative SUNY campus programs include chat
rooms that provide students with an opportunity
to practice conversational English with native
speakers and an orientation to American culture
class. - International clubs at SUNY campuses host
dinners, sports events and entertainment
activities to strengthen relationships between
international and domestic students.
