The State University of New York
2
SUNY
Operation Inform08
  • Student Services at SUNY Campuses
  • Students and families benefit from expansive
  • and comprehensive services at SUNYs 64
  • campuses.
  • While some services begin prior to
  • enrollment, most are delivered to students
  • on campus.
  • Factor in these services when searching for
  • colleges and making an enrollment decision.

SUNY
Operation Inform08
What are Student Services? Student services are
comprised of resources, networks, and
programs that support student learning and
personal needs. These services begin at
pre-enrollment, continue through college (and
sometimes beyond) and include the following
  • Academic Advising
  • Career Placement and Internships
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Finding a Major/Undeclared
  • First-Year Experience (FYE) and Learning
    Communities
  • Health and Wellness
  • Learning Centers
  • Personal Counseling
  • Physical or Learning Disabilities
  • Transfer
  • Tutoring

4
Academic Advising
SUNY
Operation Inform08
  • Quality academic advising plays a role in
retaining students, keeping them on track and
    minimizing the time-to-degree
  • All SUNY campuses provide academic advising to
    students.
  • Academic advisors are faculty, professional
    staff, and/or peers.
  • Advising maybe delivered via a students academic
college or major or may be program specific
    (Honors and EOP).
  • Advising handbooks, online student resources,
    student/advisor responsibilities and Ask an
Advisor or Virtual Advisor programs exist at
    SUNY campuses.

5
Finding a Major/Undeclared
SUNY
Operation Inform08
  • Undeclared is a popular major at SUNY
  • campuses! And, at most campuses it is ok
  • to be undeclared.
  • At many SUNY campuses, academic advising and
career services departments collaborate to advise
    undeclared students.
  • Innovative programs include majors/information
    fairs, interest and self-assessments, online
    resources, handbooks, and courses/seminars.
  • Some campuses offer semester or year-long
    exploratory programs.

6
First-Year Experience (FYE) and Learning
Communities
SUNY
Operation Inform08
  • FYE programs aid students in the transition to
college and enable them to connect with other
students, staff, faculty, and campus resources.
  • Goals of FYE programs are to increase levels of
    academic engagement, student-to-student
    interaction, faculty-to-student interaction,
student involvement on campus, and link
    curriculum to co-curriculum.
  • Some SUNY campuses provide these experiences
through a credit course, seminar or learning
community while others assign a faculty, staff or
    student mentor to new students.
  • Unique opportunities include sophomore, junior,
    and/or senior experiences, reading programs,
skills workshops, and outdoor adventures prior to
    the academic year.

7
Career Placement and Internships
SUNY
Operation Inform08
Career planning centers help students evaluate
interests, abilities, experiences, and values.
These characteristics play an important role in
selecting a major, transfer school, and job
  • All SUNY career centers aid students in finding
employment after graduation and many assist in
identifying internships for credit, pay, and/or
    experience.
  • MonsterTRAK and self-assessment resources enable
students to use current technology to identify
internship and job opportunities, as well as
    potential majors.
  • Many career centers continue to assist students
    after graduation.

8
English as a Second Language (ESL)
SUNY
Operation Inform08
ESL services vary greatly from campus to campus
and range from full programs to a series of
courses.
  • Most ESL programs and services focus on
listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Innovative SUNY campus programs include chat
rooms that provide students with an opportunity
to practice conversational English with native
speakers and an orientation to American culture
    class.
  • International clubs at SUNY campuses host
    dinners, sports events and entertainment
    activities to strengthen relationships between
    international and domestic students.

9
Health and Wellness
SUNY
Operation Inform08
A wide array of services are offered and include
medical diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of
common health problems, as well as
storing/administering medications, pharmacy
services, and wellness/education programming.
  • Facilities are staffed by nurses, nurse
practitioners and, at some campuses, a doctor.
  • Collaborative relationships exit between campus
    health centers and counseling centers.

    required to use them.
  • Prospective students may self-identify on the
SUNY common application and/or contact campuses
    directly.
  • Most campuses require medical or professional
documentation to qualify for and/or receive
    services.

12
Tutoring
SUNY
Operation Inform08
  • Workshops, courses, and centers focused on
student success are available at all SUNY
campuses for free or a nominal fee.
  • Tutoring may be offered at a single center or
through special centers such as those that focus
    on writing and math.
  • Tutoring services are delivered in group settings
or one-on-one sessions with a campus professional
    or peer.
  • Many campuses offer academic success workshops
    and courses.

13
Transfer
SUNY
Operation Inform08
A seamless transfer process is important to
success and SUNY services such as individualized
counseling, information workshops, catalog
libraries, information sheets, and transfer
days/college fairs help facilitate a positive
experience for students.
  • Many campuses have online summaries of agreements
    including transfer articulation, unified programs
    of study, and joint admissions.
  • Web-based resources include downloadable transfer
guides, transfer tips, selecting a transfer
college, transfer checklists, and college visit
    and interview tips.
  • Most SUNY campuses have staff and/or offices
dedicated to assisting students transferring to
    or from a given campus.
