All About Multiplication
  • Kari Noles
  • CECS 4100.007

2
Unit Topic
  • Multiplication
  • Subject Matter Math
  • Grade Level 4th

3
Unit Summary
  • Students will learn the importance of
multiplication and how it relates to their lives.
They will understand the relationship between
adding and multiplying, and more importantly that
multiplying is an easier method. They will become
very familiar with the times table and will be
creating one of their own. Students will also
begin working on multiplying two-digit numbers.
They will learn other ways to demonstrate
multiplication (visual aids) and will give a
    presentation to the class.

4
Prerequisite Skills
  • Understands addition very well
  • Can do basic skills on a computer
  • Can work on a word processor

5
Materials Required for Unit
  • Computer
  • Internet access
  • Printer
  • Interactive Software

6
Essential Questions
  • How do you use multiplication in your daily life?
  • Why is it important to know how to multiply?

7
Unit Questions
  • What will the answer be when you multiply any
    number by 1?
  • What is the answer to 7 x 0?
  • Will 6 x 4 and 4 x 6 equal the same thing? Why?

8
Student Objectives
  • The student will be able to complete a times
table on their own with 98 accuracy.
  • The student will be able to multiply two-digit
numbers by one-digit numbers with 95 accuracy.
  • The student will be able to demonstrate the
relationship between adding and multiplying with
    98 accuracy.

9
TEKS Requirements
  • Section 111.16 4 Number, operation, and
    quantitative reasoning. The student multiplies
and divides to solve meaningful problems
involving whole numbers. The student is expected
    to
  • (B) represent multiplication and division
situations in picture, word, and number form
  • (C) recall and apply multiplication facts through
    12 x 12
  • (D) use multiplication to solve problems
    involving two-digit numbers

10
ISTE Requirements
  • In grades 3-5 the students will have
opportunities to use technology resources (e.g.,
    calculators, data collection probes, videos,
    educational software) for problem solving,
    self-directed learning, and extended learning
    activities.

11
Fun Activities
  • Students will work independently on Clue Finders.
This is an interactive software installed on the
computers that allow the students to improve
their multiplication skills while having fun!
  • The students will be divided into groups of three
and given a two-digit multiplication problem.
Each group will then have to create a visual aid
to demonstrate how to work the problem and get
the correct answer. Each groups needs to be able
to teach the rest of the class (using their
visual aid and the whiteboard) how to do the
    problem.

12
Activities Timeline
  • Week 1 Familiarize students with the terms that
will arise during multiplication. Demonstrate the
    relationship between adding and multiplying.
Using visual props, begin teaching the students
    how to multiply.
  • Week 2 Introduce the times table. Play Bingo
game with the times table using only one-digit
numbers. Begin having the students create their
    own times table.
  • Week 3 Work on having the students be able to
recall multiplication facts through 5. Have the
students work on internet software or the
    interactive websites.

13
Activities Timeline cont.
  • Week 4 Work on having students be able to recall
multiplication facts through 12. Have students
demonstrate their created times table to the rest
    of the class.
  • Week 5 Introduce the concept of multiplying
two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. Repeat
this concept several times to make sure it is
    understood.
  • Week 6 Assign each group of 3 students a
multiplication problem. They need to create a
visual aid to demonstrate how to work the problem
and get the correct answer. Each group needs to
be able to teach the rest of the class (using
their visual aid and the whiteboard) how to solve
    their problem.
