Minimizing Your Risk
  • Dont fall for the bait.
  • Do not respond to the phisher.
  • Do not give your personal information through
    email
  • Do not click on the link provided.
  • If you feel you should respond to the message,
    call the company and ask if they requested the
    information via e-mail.
  • Before you delete the message forward it to the
    company being impersonated (your bank, credit
    card company, AOL, e-Bay, etc.)

Safe Computer Usage
  • Update your virus protections software regularly.
  • Do not download files sent to you by strangers or
    click on hyperlinks from people you do not know.
  • Use a firewall program.
  • Use a secure browser. Make sure you look for the
    https and the lock when putting in
    confidential information.
  • Try not to store financial information on your
    computer unless absolutely necessary. If so, use
    strong passwords.
  • Before you dispose of a computer, delete personal
    information.

If Youre a Victim
  • Place a fraud alert on your credit reports and
    review your credit reports.
  • Close any accounts that have been tampered with
    or opened fraudulently.
  • File a report with your local police or the
    police in the community where the identity theft
    took place.
  • File a complaint with the FTC.
  • Forward the message to the Federal Trade
    Commission at spam_at_uce.gov who will investigate
    and prosecute the offenders.
  • You can also forward the message to
    reportphishing_at_antiphishing.com and file a
    complaint with the FBI at www.ifccfbi.gov.
