5
What is multimedia?
  • Any combination of different media types.

6
What is multimedia computing?
  • A sub-set of computing.
  • The processes involved in the production of
applications which achieve their aims through the
careful combination of different types of media
  • DESIGN As with all systems a multimedia system
must be well designed with a clear aim and a set
of objectives which will fulfil that aim through
    stated objectives.
  • IMPLEMENTATION This involves the use of
appropriate packages to develop the system.
  • EVALUATION All systems require thorough
evaluation and testing to determine the extent to
which they work and fullfil the requirements

7
Levels of Multimedia Systems
  • Presentation using multimedia
  • No interaction
  • Eg. a Video or rolling advertisement
  • Interactive Multimedia
  • User has control of which parts of the system
    have focus and when
  • A DVD or computer game or interactive video
  • Hypermedia
  • A structure of linked elements with navigation
  • A web page

8
Environments
  • Two main environments
  • CD
  • Media use for CD
  • Web
  • Media use for the web

9
What is Internet Technology?
  • The technology involved with the Internet!
  • What is the internet
  • Interconnected set of networks
  • each network is considered independent
  • each is administered separately
  • Global connections
  • millions of users
  • massive spread of information
  • growing daily!
  • History

10
Internet Technology covers
  • Servers (Back ends)
  • Host computers holding information
  • not necessarily web pages
  • Could be email or file server
  • Clients (front-ends)
  • Usually Web Sites
  • Web Site is a collection of web pages
  • Networking and communications between the server
    and client.

11
The Internet includes
  • WWW the www is just one part of the Internet!
  • Email
  • Newsgroups / Usenet
  • Telnet
  • FTP
  • Chat / IRC / Internet Phones / Web Cams / Video
    Conferencing

12
Multimedia Computing and Internet Technology
  • These two fields are inter-related.
  • Multimedia Systems may be web based so Multimedia
Computing can involve a knowledge of Internet
    Technology.
  • Web Based Systems may include Multimedia so
    Internet Technology can involve Multimedia
    Computing.

Web Multimedia vs CD based Multimedia Systems
  • Similarities
  • Both include many types of media linked together
    in pursuit of the aim.
  • Differences
  • Significance of download time vs quality (or
    presence) of media
  • Web designers must consider that certain browsers
    do not support certain formats.
  • Browsers usually provide sequential navigation by
default need to consider the implications
