Shoftim
Devarim 16 18 (ISR) Appoint judges and
officers within all your gates, which ????  your
Elohim is giving you, according to your tribes.
And they shall judge the people with righteous
right-ruling.
8
Tzedeq Tzedeq
Devarim 16 19-20 (ISR) 19 Do not distort
right-ruling. Do not show partiality, nor take a
bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise
and twists the words of the righteous. 20 Follow
righteousness, righteousness alone (Tzedeq,
Tzedeq), so that you live and inherit the land
which ????  your Elohim is giving you.
9
Tzedeq Tzedeq
  • Key Points/questions
  • Tzedeq, Tzedeq Repeated for emphasis.
  • Justice, Justice (JPS) Righteousness,
    Righteousness (Artscroll). The Aramaic Targum
expands on this to read Honesty, Honesty,
    Truth, Truth.
  • The righteous will judge justly (v. 16).
  • Implication If Israels judges do not follow
Tzedeq, Tzedeq, Israel will NOT live and inherit
    the Land given by YHWH.
  • Yeshayahu/Isaiah 3217 (ISR) The work of
righteousness (tzedeqah) shall be peace, and the
service of righteousness (tzedeqah) be rest and
    safety forever.

10
Tzedeq Tzedeq
  • Key Points/questions
  • Yeshayahu/Isaiah 3217 (ISR) The work of
righteousness (tzedeqah) shall be peace, and the
service of righteousness (tzedeqah) be rest and
    safety forever.

11
Do Not Do So II
Devarim 16 21-22 (ISR) 21 Do not plant for
yourself any tree as an Asherah near the altar of
????  your Elohim that you make for yourself. 22
And do not set up a pillar (matztzevah), which
????  your Elohim hates. Devarim 12 3-4 (ISR)
3 And you shall break down their altars, and
smash their pillars, and burn their Asherim with
fire. And you shall cut down the carved images of
their mighty ones and shall destroy their name
out of that place. 4 Do not do so to ????  your
Elohim,
12
Do Not Do So II
  • Key Points/questions
  • No Asherah trees, no pillars.
  • Yaakov/Jacob set up several pillars to YHWH
e.g. Genesis 2818 (NASB) So Jacob rose early in
the morning, and took the stone that he had put
under his head and set it up as a pillar
(matztzevah), and poured oil on its top.
  • Why no pillars now??

Rashi Comments (A)lthough it was dear to Him
in the days of the Patriarchs, now He hates it,
since these people made it a statute for
idolatry.
13
Do Not Do So II
Like so much else in Canaanite religion, the name
and worship of Asherah were borrowed from
Assyria. She was the wife of the war-god Asir
whose name was identified with that of the city
of. Assur with the result that he became the
national god of Assyria. Since Asirtu was merely
the feminine form of Asir, "the superintendent"
or "leader," it is probable that it was
originally an epithet of Ishtar (Ashtoreth) of
Nineveh. (continued)
14
Do Not Do So II
In the West, however, Asherah and Ashtoreth came
to be distinguished from one another, Asherah
being exclusively the goddess of fertility,
whereas Ashtoreth passed into a
moon-goddess. (from ISBE Bible Dictionary)
Asherah is the consort of Baal, and known as
Venus to the Romans and Diana to the Greeks.
15
Do Not Do So II
Did you know? Biblical archaeologists have
discovered drawings of Asherah that depict her as
YHWHs wife?
16
Idolatry and Stoning
Devarim 17 2-4 (ISR) 2 When there is found in
your midst, in any of your cities which ????
your Elohim is giving you, a man or a woman who
does what is evil in the eyes of ????  your
Elohim, in transgressing His covenant, 3 and has
gone and served other mighty ones and bowed down
to them, or to the sun or to the moon or to any
of the host of the heavens, which I have not
commanded, 4 and it has been made known to you
and you have heard, and has searched diligently.
Then see, if true the matter is confirmed that
such an abomination has been done in Yisrael,
17
Idolatry and Stoning
Devarim 17 5-7 (ISR) 5 then you shall bring out
to your gates that man or woman who has done this
evil matter, and you shall stone to death that
man or woman with stones. 6 At the mouth of two
or three witnesses shall he that is to die be put
to death. He is not put to death by the mouth of
one witness. 7 The hand of the witnesses shall
be first against him to put him to death, and the
hand of all the people last. So you shall purge
the evil from your midst.
18
Idolatry and Stoning
  • Key Points/questions
  • A commandment while in the Land.
  • An abomination Serving other gods or the
    sun, moon stars.
  • IdolatrySpiritual Adultery. PenaltyDeath by
    Stoning.
  • 2 or 3 witnesses are required//1 witness will
not do. The witnesses are to be the first to
cast the stones. Can DNA evidence cast stones?

19
Idolatry and Stoning
  • Key Points/questions
  • Read Yochanon/John 81-20.
  • Was Yeshua making reference to this passage in
    Devarim?
  • Who are the witnesses?
  • Comparing Yeshuas words with this passage in
Devarim, is there anything we can glean about
    Ephraim and the Northern Kingdoms
    idolatry/adultery?

20
According to All they Instruct You
Devarim 17 8-10 (ISR) 8 When any matter arises
which is too hard for you to judge, between blood
and blood, between plea and plea, or between
stroke and stroke matters of strife within your
gates then you shall rise and go up to the
place which ????  your Elohim chooses, 9 and
shall come to the priests, the Lewites, and to
the judge who is in those days, and shall
inquire. And they shall declare to you the word
of right-ruling, 10 and you shall do according to
the word which they declare to you from that
place which ????  chooses. And you shall guard to
do according to all that they instruct you.
21
According to All they Instruct You
Devarim 17 11-13 (ISR) 11 Do according to the
Torah in which they teach you, according to the
right-ruling which they say to you. You do not
turn to the right or to the left from the word
which they declare to you. 12 And the man who
acts arrogantly, so as not to listen to the
priest who stands to serve there before ????
your Elohim, or to the judge, that man shall die.
So you shall purge the evil from Yisrael. 13
And let all the people hear and fear, and no
longer do arrogantly.
22
According to All they Instruct You
  • Commandment 579 Devarim 1711 Do not deviate from
    the word of the Sanhedrin
  • Key Points/questions
  • Does this passage mean that believers in Yeshua
must adhere to the rulings of rabbinic Judaism?

23
According to All they Instruct You
  • Key Points/questions
  • Traditionally the Great Sanhedrin consisted of
70 members the High Priest, total71.
  • The Sanhedrin condemned Yeshua. Were they
judging justly, and should we affirm their
    ruling?
  • Peter and Stephen both tell us (in Acts 3 and
7, respectively) that Yeshua is the Prophet like
Moshe. Devarim 1815-19 say that if you do not
heed that Prophets words, YHWH will require it
of you. Did the Sanhedrins of 30 CE to the
present heed the words of Yeshua?

24
According to All they Instruct You
  • Key Points/questions
  • Did the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) consult the
    Great Sanhedrin?
  • The Talmud is not a uniform interpretation of
the Torah, but captures the disagreements of the
rabbis. Was there a Sanhedrin formed to solve
    these disputed interpretations?

25
A King Over You
Devarim 17 14-16 (ISR) 14 When you come to the
land which ????  your Elohim is giving you, and
shall possess it and shall dwell in it, and you
shall say, Let me set a sovereign over me like
all the gentiles that are around me, 15 you
shall certainly set a sovereign over you whom
????  your Elohim shall choose. Set a sovereign
over you from among your brothers, you are not
allowed to set a foreigner over you, who is not
your brother. 16 Only, he is not to increase
horses for himself, nor cause the people to
return to Mitsrayim to increase horses, for ????
has said to you, Do not return that way again.
26
A King Over You
Devarim 17 17-20 (ISR) 17 And he is not to
increase wives for himself, lest his heart turn
away, nor is he to greatly increase silver and
gold for himself. 18 And it shall be, when he
sits on the throne of his reign, that he shall
write for himself a copy of this Torah in a book,
from the one before the priests, the Lewites. 19
And it shall be with him, and he shall read it
all the days of his life, so that he learns to
fear ????  his Elohim and guard all the Words of
this Torah and these laws, to do them, 20 so that
his heart is not lifted up above his brothers,
and so as not to turn aside from the command,
right or left, so that he prolongs his days in
his reign, he and his children, in the midst of
Yisrael.
27
A King Over You
  • Key Points/questions
  • Israel was designed for YHWH to be King over
    Israel.
  • Prophecy by Moshe Israel will ask for a King.
  • According to the Talmud (Sanhedrin 20b), Israel
had 3 commandments once established in Israel
  • Request a King
  • Eliminate the seed of Amalek
  • Build the Temple

28
A King Over You
  • Key Points/questions
  • When Israel chooses a King, it must be the King
    YHWH chooses.
  • The King is not to multiply horses or wives
  • The King must write two copies of the Torah in
order to read it every day, and learn to keep it.

29
The Abominations of the Gentiles
Devarim 18 9-12 (ISR) 9 When you come into the
land which ????  your Elohim is giving you, do
not learn to do according to the abominations of
those gentiles. 10 Let no one be found among you
who makes his son or his daughter pass through
the fire, or one who practises divination, or a
user of magic, or one who interprets omens or a
sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a
medium (KJV consulter with familiar spirits),
or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12
For whoever does these are an abomination to
????, and because of these abominations ????
your Elohim drives them out from before you.
30
The Abominations of the Gentiles
  • Key Points/questions
  • The Nations (Gentiles) are going to driven out
of Israel because of their abominations.
  • Giving our children as a burnt offering,
    divination, magic, consulting familiar spirits
    and sorcery are forbidden.

31
Divination in the Book of Acts
Acts 1616-17 (CJB) 16 Once, when we were going
to the place where the minyan gathered, we were
met by a slave girl who had in her a snake-spirit
(Greek puthon, most translations spirit of
divination Aramaic qetsma, divinations,
soothsaying) that enabled her to predict the
future. She earned a lot of money for her owners
by telling fortunes. 17 This girl followed
behind Sha'ul and the rest of us and kept
screaming, "These men are servants of God
Ha'Elyon! They're telling you how to be saved!"
32
Divination in the Book of Acts
Acts 1617-18 (CJB) 17 This girl followed behind
Sha'ul and the rest of us and kept screaming,
"These men are servants of God Ha'Elyon! They're
telling you how to be saved!" 18 She kept this
up day after day, until Sha'ul, greatly
disturbed, turned and said to the spirit, "In the
name of Yeshua the Messiah, I order you to come
out of her!" And the spirit did come out, at that
very moment.
33
Divination in the Book of Acts
Acts 1619-21 (CJB) 19 But when her owners saw
that what had come out was any further prospect
of profit for them, they seized Sha'ul and Sila
and dragged them to the market square to face the
authorities. 20 Bringing them to the judges,
they said, "These men are causing a lot of
trouble in our city, since they are Jews. 21
What they are doing is advocating customs that
are against the law for us to accept or practice,
since we are Romans."
My View vv 20-21 the argument most
Christians make against Messianics.
34
Magic and Diviners
Devarim 1814 (Transliterated Hebrew) Ki hagoyim
haeley asher atah yoresh otem el-meonniym
vel-qosemiym yishmau vatah lo ken natan leka
YHWH Eloheyka. Singular qasam Devarim 18 14
(ISR) for these nations whom you are possessing
do listen to those using magic and to diviners.
But as for you, YHWH your Elohim has not
appointed such for you.
35
Magic and Diviners
  • Key Points/questions
  • Qassam Rockets, which regularly are launched by
Hamas with the intent to kill Jews in Israel, are
named after Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam, a Syrian cleric
who preached Jihad against the British and
Zionists in the 1920s and 30s. He was killed in
the first guerilla action against the British in
1935. Al-Qassam means the generous or the
charitable in Arabic. Interesting that Qasam
here in Hebrew means to practice divination.
  • Magic. Literal meaning is to cause something
    to make an appearance.

36
A Prophet Like Moshe
Devarim 18 15-19 (ISR) 15 YHWH your Elohim
shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from
your midst, from your brothers. Listen to Him,
16 according to all you asked of YHWH your
Elohim in Horeb in the day of the assembly,
saying, Let me not hear again the voice of YHWH
my Elohim, nor let me see this great fire any
more, lest I die.
LXX Ekklesia
37
A Prophet Like Moshe
Devarim 18 17-19 (ISR) 17 And YHWH said to me,
What they have spoken is good. 18 I shall raise
up for them a Prophet like you out of the midst
of their brothers. And I shall put My Words in
His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I
command Him. 19 And it shall be, the man who
does not listen to My Words which He speaks in My
Name, I require it of him.
38
A Prophet Like Moshe
  • Key Points/questions
  • The Apostolic Scriptures identify this Prophet
as Yeshua (Acts 323-24 Acts 737).
  • Listen to Him. Shema Yisrael, Yeshua is
    speaking My words!
  • When the priests and Levites questioned
Yochanon the Immerser (John 121), they asked him
if he was The Prophet. (He said No).

39
A Prophet Like Moshe
  • Key Points/questions
  • Muslims believe that Mohammed is this Prophet
(hence they call him The Prophet). But did
Mohammed really come from among the midst of the
Israelites who left Egypt? Mohammed, a brother
    Israelite?
  • YHWH sending the Prophet like Moshe is in
response to the request to not hear the voice of
YHWH. Psalm 29 tells us that the voice of YHWH
shakes the wilderness, strips forests bare,
breaks the cedars of Lebanon, and causes deer to
    give birth.

40
A Prophet Like Moshe
Devarim 18 18 (ISR) I shall raise up for them a
Prophet like you out of the midst of their
brothers. And I shall put My Words in His mouth,
and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
  • Key Points/questions
  • If Yeshua is the Prophet like Moshe, and if he
came to speak exactly the words given to Him by
YHWH, and if He did speak all that YHWH
commanded, why didnt the Priesthood and the
Pharisees hearken to those words and obey what
    Yeshua said?

41
I Will Require It of Him
Devarim 18 19 (ISR) And it shall be, the man
who does not listen to My Words which He speaks
in My Name, I require it of him.
Key Points/questions JPS99 will call him to
account Artscroll will exact from him
KJV will require it of him Require it.
edrosh, root is darash, to seek, inquire
42
I Will Require It of Him
Edrosh. However, the word can also carry the
meaning of require or call to account, as in
Berishiyt/Genesis 9 4-6 (ISR) 4 But do not eat
flesh with its life, its blood. 5 But only your
blood for your lives I require, from the hand of
every beast I require (edrosh) it, and from the
hand of man. From the hand of every mans brother
I require (edrosh) the life of man. 6 Whoever
sheds mans blood, by man his blood is shed, for
in the image of Elohim has He made man.
43
How to Tell a False Prophet
Devarim 18 21-22 (ISR) 21And when you say in
your heart, How do we know the word which YHWH
has not spoken? 22 when the prophet speaks in
the Name of YHWH and the word is not, or comes
not, that is the word which YHWH has not spoken.
The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. Do not
be afraid of him.
44
How to Tell a False Prophet
Key Points/questions Since many of the
prophecies of the Bible have not yet come to
pass, and certainly did not come to pass during
the lifetime of the one who made the
prophecy.. how do we prove that
Yehezqel/Ezekiel, Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah and even
Moshe are not false prophets??
Have all of Moshes Prophecies come true?
45
Cities of Refuge
Devarim 19 7-10 (ISR) 7Therefore I am
commanding you, saying, Separate three cities
for yourself. 8 And if YHWH your Elohim enlarges
your border, as He swore to your fathers, and has
given you the land which He promised to give to
your fathers 9 when you guard all this command
to do it, which I am commanding you today, to
love YHWH your Elohim and to walk in His ways all
the days then you shall add three more cities
for yourself besides these three, 10 so that
innocent blood is not shed in the midst of your
land which YHWH your Elohim is giving you as an
inheritance, or blood-guilt shall be upon you.
46
Cities of Refuge
  • Key Points/questions
  • The purpose of the cities is protection against
the shedding of innocent blood on the Land.
  • Is this an actionable commandment for us today?

47
Not for Murderers
Devarim 19 11-13 (ISR) 11But when anyone hates
his neighbour, and shall lie in wait for him and
rise against him and smite the life from him so
that he dies, then he shall flee to one of these
cities, 12 and the elders of his city shall send
and bring him from there, and give him into the
hand of the revenger of blood, and he shall die.
13 Your eye shall not pardon him, but you shall
purge the blood of innocent blood from Yisrael,
so that it might be well with you.
48
Not for Murderers
  • Key Points/questions
  • The cities of refuge were only for manslaughter
or negligent homicide, not for murder. A
murderer cannot safely seek refuge at a city of
    refuge.

49
Malicious Witness
  • Devarim 19 15 19 (ISR) One witness does not
rise up against a man concerning any crookedness
or any sin that he commits. At the mouth of two
witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses a
matter is established. 16 When a malicious
witness rises up against any man to accuse him of
turning aside, 17 then both men who have the
dispute shall stand before YHWH, before the
priests and the judges who serve in those days.
18 And the judges shall diligently search and see
if the witness is a false witness, who has
falsely accused his brother, 19 then you shall do
to him as he thought to have done to his brother.
Thus you shall purge the evil from your midst.
  • Key Points/question
  • 2 or 3 Witnesses establish truth.
  • A False witness shall have done to him what he
thought to do to his brother, e.g. false witness
accusing of murder bears the penalty for murder.

50
Malicious Witness
Devarim 19 15 17 (ISR) One witness does not
rise up against a man concerning any crookedness
or any sin that he commits. At the mouth of two
witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses a
matter is established. 16 When a malicious
witness rises up against any man to accuse him of
turning aside, 17 then both men who have the
dispute shall stand before YHWH, before the
priests and the judges who serve in those days.
51
Malicious Witness
  • Devarim 19 18 19 (ISR) 18 And the judges shall
diligently search and see if the witness is a
false witness, who has falsely accused his
brother, 19 then you shall do to him as he
thought to have done to his brother. Thus you
shall purge the evil from your midst.
  • Key Points/question
  • 2 or 3 Witnesses establish truth.
  • A False witness shall have done to him what he
thought to do to his brother, e.g. false witness
accusing of murder bears the penalty for murder.

52
Exemptions from Battle
Devarim 20 5-9 (abridged) (ISR) 5And the
officers shall speak to the people, saying, Who
is the man who has built a new house and has not
dedicated itAnd who is the man who has planted a
vineyard and has not begun to use itAnd who is
the man who is engaged to a woman and has not
taken herAnd the officers shall speak further to
the people, and say, Who is the man who is
afraid and tender of heart? Let him go and return
to his house, lest the heart of his brothers
faint like his heart. 9 And it shall be, when
the officers have finished speaking to the
people, that they shall appoint commanders of the
divisions to lead the people.
53
Exemptions from Battle
  • Key Points/questions
  • Both merciful for the soldier, and for improved
    morale in the army
  • How much would military morale improve if this
were in the regulations for modern militaries?

54
Halakhah for War
Devarim 2010-13 (ISR) 10 When you draw near to
a city to fight against it, then you shall make a
call for peace to it. 11 And it shall be that if
it accepts your call for peace, and shall open to
you, then all the people found in it are to be
your compulsory labour, and serve you. 12 But if
it does not make peace with you, and shall fight
against you, then you shall besiege it, 13 and
????  your Elohim shall give it into your hands,
and you shall smite every male in it with the
edge of the sword.
55
Halakhah for War
Devarim 2014-15 (ISR). 14 Only the women, and
the little ones, and the livestock, and all that
is in the city, all its spoil, you take as
plunder for yourself. And you shall eat the
enemies plunder which ????  your Elohim gives
you. 15 Do so to all the cities which are very
far from you, which are not of the cities of
these nations.
56
Halakhah for War
Devarim 2016-18 (ISR) 16 Only, of the cities of
these peoples which ????  your Elohim gives you
as an inheritance, you do not keep alive any that
breathe, 17 but you shall certainly put them
under the ban the H?ittite and the Amorite and
the Kenaanite and the Perizzite and the H?iwwite
and the Yeb_usite, as ????  your Elohim has
commanded you, 18 lest they teach you to do
according to all their abominations which they
have done for their mighty ones, and you sin
against ????  your Elohim.
Key Points/questions With regard to which
enemies fall under this rule, there is a
disagreement among the Sages. According to Rashi
and Raavad, this applies only to optional wars
against enemies other than the seven Canaanite
nationsRambam and Ramban interpret that all
nations had to be given the opportunity to make
peace, including the Canaanites.
57
58
Halakhah for War Trees
  • Key Points/questions
  • No need for unnecessary collateral damage to
    fruit trees.
  • A new fruit tree takes 4 full years before its
fruit may be eaten in the 5th year
    (Vayiqra/Leviticus 1923).

Isaiah 53 Refers to the Messiah
  • Babylonian Talmud "The Messiah --what is his
name?...The Rabbis say, The Leper Scholar, as it
is said, surely he has borne our griefs and
carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him a
leper, smitten of God and afflicted...'"

Isaiah 53 Refers to the Messiah

Isaiah 53 Refers to the Messiah
  • Rabbi Moses Maimonides "What is the manner of
Messiah's advent....there shall rise up one of
whom none have known before, and signs and
wonders which they shall see performed by him
will be the proofs of his true origin for the
Almighty, where he declares to us his mind upon
this matter, says, Behold a man whose name is
the Branch, and he shall branch forth out of his
place' (Zech. 612). And Isaiah speaks similarly
of the time when he shall appear, without father
or mother or family being known, He came up as a
sucker before him, and as a root out of dry
earth, etc....in the words of Isaiah, when
describing the manner in which kings will harken
to him, At him kings will shut their mouth for
that which had not been told them have they seen,
and that which they had not heard they have
perceived." (From the Letter to the South
(Yemen), quoted in The Fifty-third Chapter of
Isaiah According to the Jewish Interpreters, Ktav
