1Online Assessment Orientation
2- The Assessment Orientation process is a vital
part in making the distance learning experience
successful. - It will familiarize you with the Blackboard
software environment and will give you
instructions on how to enter your class.
3Minimum Requirements
- 256MB RAM minimum
- 640 x 480 color monitor
- 28.8k modem minimum (56k preferred) or higher
- Printer
- Windows 98 or higher
- Web browser Explorer 6.0 or higher
Computers and laptops are available for use in
the BCCC Library, Building 5, LRC.
4- Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Note AOL users
may encounter problems. - Word processing software, preferably Microsoft
Word. (Some courses may require additional
software.) - Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free download is
available at adobe.com) - Internet access (Internet Service Provider)
- Active personal email address or student email
address - Completion of Online Assessment
5Competencies
- Be familiar with the Windows environment.
- Connect to the Internet or an online service.
- Identify and use icons, menus and
directories/subdirectories - Start an application and create and save a
document - Name, save, retrieve, revise a document, and
attach a file
Before you enroll in an online class at BCCC you
should be comfortable demonstrating the
competencies listed
6- Use printing options
- Insert and eject floppy disks, thumb drives and
CD-ROM - Initialize name/rename files
- Copy documents from hard disk to media and vice
versa - Create and name folders and subdirectories
- Save, open, place documents inside folders or
subdirectories - Open and work with more than one application at a
time - Attach a file and send it to instructor or open
an attached file.
7- Open and read PDF files with Adobe Acrobat
Reader. - Access and use resources on the Internet and the
World Wide Web. - Use electronic mail (compose, send, retrieve,
read, respond, and forward messages, and attach
files) - Obtain/maintain account on the Internet or an
on-line service that provides Internet access. - Connect a computer to a modem and telephone line
for dial-in access.
8Online Assessment
9- This assessment will test your computer skills on
downloading and opening a file, inserting text to
a file, saving a file to a directory or media,
sending email, and attaching a file to that
email. You must have Microsoft Word 2003 or
higher to complete this assessment.

- All NEW online students are required to complete
the Online Assessment and email it to
brendar_at_beaufortccc.edu by the first day of
class. (Requires Microsoft Word) - The Online Assessment is located

11- Follow the directions carefully.
- You must have Microsoft Word 2003 or higher to
open this file. - Email addresses for online instructors are listed
on the BCCC web site along with the online class
listings. -
12- If you are unable to complete this assessment
consider taking a seated class at BCCC or at your
local community college in one of the following
areas - CIS 110 - Introduction to Computers CIS 111 -

BasicsIntroduction to Computers Class offered
through Continuing Education (8 week
certificate)
13Accessing Your Course
14- Open your Internet Browser
- Go to the BCCC web site
- Click on the Distance Learning link on the left
hand column drop-down box.

16- Click on link (Click here to get instructions on
how to enter Blackboard)
- Important information is located on this page.
Please refer back to this page for additional
information throughout your class.
17- You will be taken to the Blackboard login Screen.
- Single click on LOGIN button.
18Username last name first initial middle
initial 2-digit birth month 2-digit
day-of-birth. (lowercase only) Example For
John Q. Public born 01/23/1991 the username would
be publicjq0123 Password last six digits of your
Social Security only. Single click on the Login
button to enter your Blackboard Homepage.
Example USERNAME publicjq0123PASSWORD 001234
You will not be able to access your class until
the first day of class. Those who registered late
need to wait at least 24 hours before access is
possible.
19- You will be taken to a screen called My
Institution. - All online, web-enhanced and tele-web courses
that you are enrolled in and other valuable
information will be listed on this page. - Look under the column, My Courses, single click
on the class that you would like to enter.
20Orientation to Blackboard Environment
21- Once you are in the course
- Read Announcement Page.
- Begin navigating through the course, clicking on
the left-hand buttons to familiarize yourself
with the course design.
Bookmark course URL in your Internet Browser. You
may also access the Blackboard server directly by
typing in this URL http//bb2.beaufort.cc.nc.us
in case the campus web site goes down.
22- Click on Tools, then Personal Information.
23 Click on Edit Personal Information. Enter your
student email address. If you would like your
email address to show up in the class roster
click on Set Privacy Option and make sure email
address is selected.
24- Check your email address for accuracy. Change if
not correct. It is important that your email
address is correct. Scroll down to the bottom of
the page and click on the submit button after you
have made a change. You will need to change this
information anytime you change email accounts.
25- Explore the course. Click on Course Information
and read all the supplemental information
provided to help you with your course. - It is a good idea to print out your course and
related materials.
26- Contact your instructor if you encounter any
problems navigating the course or need
clarification on assigned questions or class
expectations. - Communicating with your instructors is directly
related to achieving success in your online
course. - DO NOT WAIT FOR THE INSTRUCTOR TO CONTACT YOU.
27Instructor/Campus Orientation
28Important
- Attend Campus Orientation if required by
instructor. - The Campus Orientation is held on campus and is
a MANDATORY requirement by some instructors. - Some instructors require an Online Orientation
only. - Check the BCCC web site for orientation times and
dates.
29Conclusion
30- Please keep in mind that Internet courses are a
commitment of time and hard work just like a
traditional course. Students must set aside the
appropriate amount of time to successfully
complete all assignments and learn course
competencies. - DO NOT GET BEHIND.
