  • When you hear a national anthem, or see a
    countries flag waving, how does that make you
    feel?

Learning Objective Rise of Napoleon
  • Today, we will explain how the ideas behind the
    French Revolution led France to become an Empire
    under Napoleon Bonaparte

Vocabulary
  • Artillery a military unit usually made up of
    large guns or cannons. Artillery was the
    specialty of Napoleon Bonaparte
  • Plebiscite The term given to a national vote or
    election in France.
  • The directory The elected government that took
    control following Robespierres death not well
    respected or trusted.

  • Napoleonic Code a written set of laws created by
    Napoleon designed to eliminate injustice between
    the people of France, but took away individual
    rights and freedoms.

The General
  • Napoleon first began his rise to power as an
    officer in the French army
  • During a skirmish between Royalists (people for
    the king) and supporters of the National
    Convention his artillery unit saved the members
    of the National Convention
  • This makes him a hero, and he is promoted to
    General by the directory

With Victory
  • He was ordered to attack the enemies of France by
    the directory (Govt. after RoT)
  • He defeats Austria, Sardinia, Kingdoms in Italy
    all the way to the Mediterranean Sea
  • He attempts to crush Brittish forces in Egypt,
    but is defeated when his navy is sunk.
  • This setback is not published in French
    newspapers, and Napoleon does not lose fame

Group activity instructions
  • Look at the questions on the overhead take 2
    minutes to look in your book or talk to your
    group to discuss the answer.
  • I will randomly pick one person from a group
    right answers get a ticket for everyone in the
    group.
  • You can only answer once per class!!!

Comes Power
  • Despite ending the Reign of Terror, the directory
    was not a secure government and had largely
    failed to correct problems in France.
  • After returning from Egypt, Napoleon took control
    of the French Army and performed a Coup Detat.

The Coup
  • After surrounding the building that the
    legislature was meeting in with his army,
    Napoleon forced many of the lawmakers
    (legislatures) to leave.
  • Those who remained voted to dissolve the
    directory and form a new government (AGAIN) made
    of 3 consuls or leaders
  • Napoleon took the title of First Consul and
    became a Dictator.

Napoleon a popular dictator
  • Despite taking power from a legitimate
    government, Napoleon wanted to be a fair ruler.
  • He conducts a plebiscite, where the people of
    France voted overwhelmingly in his favor.
  • In Napoleon, they saw a strong ruler who could
    save France and make her a great nation

First lets fix France
  • Napoleon instituted 4 major changes to create
    stability in France
  • 1.) A National banking system to make sure that
    taxes were collected and spent fairly.
  • 2.) He creates Lycees, a government run public
    school to educate people in govt. service.
  • 3.) Establishes a Concord with the Catholic
    Church that gives them influence over religion,
    but no power over the state AND

  • 4 Napoleonic code A set of national laws it
    corrects much of the injustice that caused the
    French revolution.
  • It mandated fair taxes and held everyone
    regardless of their station to the same law.
  • It does take away several personal freedoms
    (speech) in the interest of public safety.
