We Learn . . .
  • 10 of what we read
  • 20 of what we hear
  • 30 of what we see
  • 50 of what we see and hear
  • 70 of what we discuss
  • 80 of what we experience
  • 95 of what we teach others.
  • - William Glasser

3
Involve your senses
  • Verbalize information
  • Try to create a visual of how the concepts fit
together. E.g. Create a 'concept map.'
  • Teach the material to someone else.
  • Use the 3R's Read, Write, Recite the material.

4
Use Flashcards
  • For definitions, vocabulary, facts, formulae,
    etc.
  • To write a question on one side, the answer on
    the other.
  • To carry with you, to study in short, spare
    moments, and for quick revision

5
Try to predict questions
  • Use the Exam Notification Booklet to get your
    focus for each subject
  • Do you understand the essential terms for the
    subject e.g. English metaphor, simile...?
  • Use old exam papers to get an idea of format
i.e. the type of questions, expected answers
  • Practise answering questions
  • Share questions with friends to get variety

6
Starting the Exam
  • Important steps

7
Identify the aim of the question
  • Just what is the question asking?
  • Highlight main concepts to be discussed
  • E.g. is it about
  • The pharaohs?
  • Daily life in Egypt?
  • Mummification processes?
  • The importance of the Nile?

8
Identify the answer format
  • Read the instructions of how you have to provide
    the information
  • i.e. how you are to answer the question e.g.
Short answer, essay format, magazine article

9
Read the questions carefully
  • Underline key words like
  • define give the precise meaning of something
  • compare show the similarities between things
  • explain - give the reasons for how and why
something is the way it is
  • outline give a brief account of main points
  • recount - retell a series of events

10
Think before you write
  • As you begin, jot down ideas on scrap paper or
    the exam question paper
  • Try to form an outline for your response in your
    jottings.

11
A good answer
  • Often starts with a direct response to the
    question.
  • Mentions the topics or concepts which the
    question describes.
  • Provides examples as well as general information.
  • Uses the technical vocabulary (jargon) of the
    subject.
  • And always... ANSWERS THE QUESTION!!
