Title: Life Functions

1
Life Functions
  • Pages 17-19

2
Life Functions
  • Nutrition
  • Respiration
  • Reproduction
  • Transport/Circulation
  • Excretion
  • Movement
  • Regulation/Coordination
  • Homeostasis

3
Inorganic
  • What type of material would be found in this car?

4
Inorganic
  • Inorganic compounds are found in Living organisms
and do not have carbon hydrogen combinations.
  • Iron (Fe)
  • Copper (Cu)
  • Salt (NaCl)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Water (H20)

5
Organic
  • Organic compounds have carbon and hydrogen
    elements in them.
  • Ex.
  • Proteins
  • Carbohydrates
  • Nucleic acids (DNA)
  • Fats

6
Which compound is organic
  • NaCl
  • C6H12O6
  • Fe (iron)
  • H2O

7
Nutrition
  • The process in which food is taken in (ingested)
then broken down into smaller molecules
(digested) which can be absorbed, wastes are
    (egested).

8
Ingestion
  • Taking in nutrients, ways differ depending on
    organism.

9
Digestion
  • Large molecules are broken into smaller ones so
    that they can be absorbed

  • Humans have 1 stomach
  • Cows have 4 stomachs
  • Ameoba have none they use enzymes

10
Respiration
  • Chemical energy that you eat is converted to a
    useable form by your body.
  • Glucose goes into your cells and is absorbed by
your mitochondria via the krebs cycle. The oxygen
you breath causes electrons to move across the
electron transport chain to generate ATP, which
you use to power your body.

11
Two types of Respiration
  • Aerobic The process of aerobic respiration uses
oxygen to produce ATP. Chemical formula is
    Glucose
Oxygen ?ATP (energy) Carbon dioxide Water
  • Anaerobic respiration Uses no oxygen to produce
    ATP.
  • Glucose (Broken down to) ?Energy (ATP)
    Ethanol Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Glucose (Broken down to) ?Energy (ATP)
    Lactic acid

12
Reproduction
  • Asexual 1 parent an organism splits to make
    another identical copy, a clone
  • Sexual 2 parents, sperm and egg produce
    offspring that are diverse

13
Transport/Circulation
  • Materials are moved through the organism. Humans
have a circulatory system. Single celled
    organisms move fluid via cyclosis.
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vPFtzs_cUddI

14
Excretion
  • Removal of cellular wastes NOT FECES

15
Excretory Organs
  • Lungs Remove CO2
  • Liver Removes toxins, dead cells
  • Skin Removes urea
  • Kidney Removes urea (nitrogen wastes)

16
Movement
  • Ability of an organism to move
  • Plants move by enzymes

  • Paramecium have cilia
  • http//footage.shutterstock.com/video.html?id2780
  • Ameoba have pseudopods

17
Survival strategies of movement/locomotion
  • Find food
  • Find shelter
  • Regulate body temp, move to shade when hot
  • Move away from predators
  • Find a mate

18
EndoSkeletons
  • Endoskeletons a calcium, magnesium, deposit left
by a cell to form a bone. Grows due to pressure
    placed on it

19
ExoSkeletons
  • Exoskeleton outside skeleton that protects
insects and crustaceans. Made of a protein called
    chitin.

20
Regulation/Coordination
  • Control of all life activities. Includes the
nervous system and the endocrine system (hormones)

21
Immunity
  • White blood cells destroy outside invaders.
    Viruses, bacteria, foreign\ proteins (pollen)

  • http//www.vimeo.com/138062

22
Synthesis
  • Simple molecules are combined to form complex
molecules such as carbs, protein and fats
    http//science.nhmccd.edu/biol/dehydrat/dehydrat.h
    tml

23
Growth
  • A cell gets larger
  • A cell reproduces

24
Metabolism
  • Cells capture and store energy and release that
energy in appropriate amounts to perform all your
    life functions.

25
Homeostasis
  • Regulates the body through all of the body
systems. If you are hot your body cools off by
sweating. If you are cold you shiver where your
muscles spasm to cause friction which creates
    heat.

26
Class Quiz Name the Life Function

  • Immunity
  • 2. A cell gets larger or reproduces
  • Growth
  • 3. Cells capture and store energy and release
    that energy
  • Metabolism

    system (hormones)
  • Regulation
  • 5. The process in which food is taken in
(ingested) then broken down into smaller
    molecules

27
  • 6. Regulates the body through all of the body
    systems.
