Measurement Notes and Formulas
Use pages 24, 25, 724, 725 in your book as a
reference!
2
In the U.S., we use English units to measure,
such as feet, gallons, and pounds. But the rest
of the world and scientists use the International
System of Units (otherwise known as SI or the
metric system).
3
Length we use meters as our base
unit. Formulas Area length x width
Area of a circle ? x radius2 Units m2 ,
cm2 , etc.
4
Volume the amount of space an object
occupies. Solid Volume is measured in
cm3 Liquid Volume is measured in liters
5
Formula Solid Volume length x width x
height Liquid volume is measured by using a
graduated cylinder. Be sure to look at the
meniscus at eye level and read the measurement at
the bottom of the curve of the liquid.
6
  • To find the volume of an irregularly shaped
object (like a rock), follow these steps
  • Fill a graduated cylinder with water to a
    specific amount.
  • Gently place the object in the cylinder (the
    water should rise)
  • Record the new measurement
  • Subtract the original measurement from the new
volume. This is the volume of the object.

7
Now we need to convert the mL measurement in cm3
for solid volume. 1 mL 1 cm3 So if the water
went up 12 mL, your rock would have a volume of
12 cm3. Mass the amount of matter that
something is made of. (in this class, we use a
triple-beam balance) Units g, kg, mg, or metric
ton (1000 kg). Conversion help 1 g 1 mL
1 cm3
8
Density the amount of matter in a given
volume. Formula density mass /
volume Units for a solid g/cm3 for a
liquid g/mL Which has more density? (wood or
lead)
9
Density of Water 1.0 g/cm3 or g/mL If an
object has a density less than 1 the
object will FLOAT on the water If an
object has a density more than 1 the
object will SINK in water
oil
water
coins in water
10
Temperature a measure of how hot (or cold)
something is. In the U.S., we use the Fahrenheit
scale (ºF) But the rest of the world uses the
Celsius scale (ºC), including scientists.Scienti
sts also use the metric unit for temperature
known as Kelvins (K).
11
Formulas for converting temperature To go from
ºF to ºC ºC 5 x (ºF 32)
9 To go from ºC to ºF
ºF (9/5 x ºC) 32 To go from ºC to
K K ºC 273 To go from K to
ºC ºC K - 273
