2Initiated in 1958, completed in 1963, Project
Mercury was the first United States manned
program. Because it was the first , it did not
technically have an official program patch. After
the program had ended, a monument was erected at
the abandoned launch site. With the passing
years, this stylistic representation of the
Mercury 7 monument has become informally adopted
as the Mercury Program patch.
