3What is Habitat for Humanity International? Â
Habitat for Humanity International is a
nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.
HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and
homelessness from the world, and to make decent
shelter a matter of conscience and
action. Habitat invites people of all
backgrounds, races and religions to build houses
together in partnership with families in
need. Through volunteer labor and donations of
money and materials, Habitat builds and
rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help
of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat
houses are sold to partner families at no profit
and financed with affordable loans. The
homeowners monthly mortgage payments are used to
build still more Habitat houses. Habitat is not
a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment
and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners
invest hundreds of hours of their own labor
sweat equity into building their Habitat house
and the houses of others.
4What is Habitat for Humanity of Frederick
County? Â
Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County is an
affiliate of HFHI an independent, locally run,
nonprofit organization. HFHFC coordinates all
aspects of Habitat home building in Frederick
County fund raising, building site selection,
partner family selection and support, house
construction, and mortgage servicing.
Since 1995, Habitat for Humanity of Frederick
County has built or renovated 25 homes. Eighteen
of the Habitat homes are in Frederick City and
seven across Frederick County, in Adamstown,
Brunswick, Buckeystown, Emmitsburg, Thurmont,
and Walkersville. It is Frederick Habitats
mission to be able to build 20 additional
homes by 2010.
5What is the Women Build program? Â
The Women Build program was established by
Habitat for Humanity International to
encourage the participation of women in the
construction of Habitat homes. Through Lowes
underwriting of the Women Build program, Habitat
affiliates are able to challenge and enable
woman to build homes to address the issue of
affordable housing.
Women Build projects provide an environment in
which women can feel comfortable learning
skills they might not have the opportunity to
otherwise learn.
While women building together offers tremendous
empowerment and sense of accomplishment - the
benefits go beyond the individuals to
transform the lives of families and their
communities.
Women Build projects bring together women from
all walks of life to actively address the
problem of children and families living in
sub-standard housing.
6The Women Build mission statementÂ
The mission of the Women Build department of
Habitat for Humanity International is to work
through affiliates to nurture, recruit and train
women to build simple, decent, healthy and
affordable houses.
Women crews have already built more than 800
Habitat for Humanity homes within the United
States, and they are now building in more than a
dozen countries.
7Why have a Women Build project?
Safe, decent housing is critical to a childs
health and development, yet children are the
single largest age group living in poverty. In
the United States alone, more than 12 million
children one out of every six live in
poverty.
In Frederick County, MD the proportion of units
affordable to the median income home buying
household has been projected to decline from
42.4 of the inventory to 14.1 of the inventory
by 2009. The number of units affordable to
extremely low wage households (those with incomes
below 30 of the area median income) is projected
to decline even further by 2009.
A Women Build project is an opportunity to
challenge women to build safe, healthy housing
where children can flourish - positively
impacting the future by making homeownership a
reality for families - while also creating a
legacy of volunteerism for their own children.
Through a Women Build project, women can realize
that they hold the solution in their hands and
they need not wait for others to address
substandard housing issues. Women have the
capability and determination to be a part of the
solution - one house and one family at a time.
8No Men?
Does a Women Build project exclude men?
A Women Build project is not about excluding men
it is about including women in the construction
of Habitat homes.
Women are often intimidated on a constructions
site, but in the comfortable environment of a
Women Build site, they quickly learn construction
and teaming skills. Some groups prefer no male
participation in a Women Build, others invite men
to participate to varying degrees.
We have identified skilled men and asked them to
be part of the training and coaching support for
the project. Having at least one skilled
supervisor (male or female) for every seven to
ten volunteers is a good and safe ratio.
  Â
What about male members of the partner family?
Male family members build right alongside women
volunteers.

16How can we have a successful Women Build project?
As with any complex activity, planning is the key
to success with a Women Build project. There are
some basic steps that must be taken to start the
momentum.
Determining the scope of the project
Ground-breaking to take place Mothers Day
weekend 2008 at Madison Street in Frederick, MD
for the Bisceglia family. Mothers and women
building hope and a future for our children
Construction will take place on Saturdays and/or
week days as special arrangements made by women
groups/organizations. While a blitz build is,
without question, visually very impressive, there
are a number of drawbacks to this style of
construction such as tension amongst volunteers
to work to stay on a tight schedule often at the
mercy of the weather and unexpected obstacles
Therefore, we will get a few Women Build houses
under our belts before even considering such.
17Develop a working lead/subcommittee structure.
A variety of committees will be required for our
Women Build project, to include, but not limited
to
Construction/Procurement Committee Lindsay
Hicks, Chair
Food service Committee Jodye Roebuck, Chair
Fund-raising Committee Jennifer Solley, Chair
Amy
DeAugustino, Co-Chair
First aid/Security Committee Lisa Wease, Chair
Public Relations/Media Committee Jodye
Roebuck, Chair
Patti, Sestina, Co-Chair
Special events Committee Teri Bisceglia, Chair
Laura Melia, Co-Chair
Training Committee Terri Wease, Chair
Volunteer Committee Donna Hawley, Chair
Carla Howell,
Co-Chair
Many tasks within the committees might be best
lead/managed by one, two or several individuals
depending how tasks are broken down.
